Big Tech was dealt a new blow by the Department of Justice.
It was originally reported by The Wall Street JournalThe DOJ wrote to the members of Congress’ judiciary committees asking them to vote for an antitrust law that would prevent Big Tech companies showing favoritism towards their products.
“If enacted, we believe that this legislation has the potential to have a positive effect on dynamism in digital markets going forward. Our future global competitiveness depends on innovators and entrepreneurs having the ability to access markets free from dominant incumbents that impede innovation, competition, resiliency, and widespread prosperity,” Peter Hyun, the acting Assistant Attorney General, wrote according to The Hill.
The American Online Innovation and Choice Act, which would be applicable to Apple, Google and Amazon, would probably apply to Meta and prevent them favoring their products over those of others.
“Discriminatory conduct by dominant platforms can sap the rewards from other innovators and entrepreneurs, reducing the incentives for entrepreneurship and innovation,” the letter continued. “Even more importantly, the legislation may support the growth of new tech businesses adjacent to the platforms, which may ultimately pose a critically needed competitive check to the covered platforms themselves.”
The legislation was argued by supporters that it would promote freedom of market principles and level playing fields. It received bipartisan support. The bill was introduced by Amy Klobuchar, a Democratic senator; it was also supported by Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, Republican senators.
The HillAlso, it was reported that the bill was supported by smaller tech companies like Yelp, Basecamp and others.
Political concerns over potential conflicts of interests in voting on the bill were also raised.
NewsbustersReports earlier this year indicated that Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer oversaw the passage of antitrust legislation, despite his daughters working for Amazon and Facebook. The result was potentially a conflict in interest.
“Big Tech employees have proven before how leftist they are. Facebook workers organized a protest demanding that Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, censor Donald Trump’s 2020 election.
Open Secrets records revealed that for “all federal candidates,” by October 2020, both Facebook and Twitter gave over 90 percent of their political contributions to Democrats for the 2020 election cycle, particularly to then-presidential candidate Joe Biden. Hundreds of Amazon employees demanded the platform stop selling a book that challenged the woke left’s narratives on gender identity in July 2021.”
Conservatives face attack. Get in touch with your representative and ask them to hold Big Tech accountable. Tech giants must give their users the freedom of speech guaranteed by the First Amendment.
