Disinfo Board Down But Not Out: DHS ‘Remains Focused on Disinformation,’ ‘False or Misleading Narratives’

Undeterred by the public backlash that prompted it to dissolve its “Misinformation Governance Board,” dubbed an Orwellian “Ministry of Truth” by its critics, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Tuesday that it “remains focused” on what it deems to be “disinformation.”

In its National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin (NTAS), the DHS revealed this information:

DHS continues to focus on information that may threaten America’s security, which includes disinformation propagated by foreign countries such as Russia or China.

The DHS says it’s targeting what it considers to be “false or misleading narratives regarding current events,” because of the violent threat they pose: “The continued proliferation of false or misleading narratives regarding current events could reinforce existing personal grievances or ideologies, and in combination with other factors, could inspire individuals to mobilize to violence.”

The “perception that the U.S. government is unwilling or unable to secure the U.S.-Mexico border” due to “changes in border security-related policies and/or enforcement mechanisms” also poses a violent domestic terrorist threat, DHS says:

Domestic violent extremists voiced their dissatisfaction with the perception of the U.S. government’s inability or unwillingness to secure the U.S. border with Mexico. They also called for the use violence to stop the flow undocumented migrants into the United States. There is a greater risk that domestic violent extremists will use changes to border security policies or enforcement mechanisms to justify violence towards individuals such as minorities, law enforcement officers and those involved in enforcement of border security.

DHS also warns that people “on public forums” are encouraging violence regarding “a high-profile U.S. Supreme Court case about abortion rights” and “election events”:

In light of a prominent U.S. Supreme Court case regarding abortion rights, both pro- and anti-abortion advocates have promoted violence on public forums. This includes against religious and government personnel, facilities and staff, as well those who hold opposing views.

The United States is entering mid-term elections season in this year’s United States. We predict that domestic violent extremists will increase violence against democratic institutions, candidates, office buildings, election workers, and other election employees.
