RedState reported earlier Monday on a shooting incident at an Fourth of July parade in Highland Park. We shared additional details about the tragic event later. Six people died and 31 were injured. Law enforcement officials say the suspect remains in hiding.
A father expecting only to have a great time at the parade, recounts his feelings in an emotional interview conducted by Chicago’s WLS.
He begins by explaining that he wasn’t concerned about the sounds of gunfire at first:
My initial thought was that it was actually the Navy who was saluting our flag with their rifles.
But he very quickly realized that wasn’t the case, when he started seeing people running away.
I grabbed my son from the car and ran.
I ran into a niche within one of the buildings. The local shops were there. I couldn’t break it.
However, the shooting stopped. The dad realized that they had to start running again in order to be safe.
He started shooting again, and I ran behind the building — and i put my son in the dumpster. He’d sit there with his dog.
He said that he secured his son and went back to search for his other family members, as they had fled at the sound gunfire. He described the scene as devastating.
It was terrible. When I got back, there was a small group of victims lying on the ground.
There was a little boy who was in….one of the police officer’s arms.
Because I was thinking about my son, it was probably the worst thing that ever happened. It was hard to imagine the pain that this family must be going through.
