Chris Cillizza, CNN’s CNN anchor, was hopeful, desperate hoping this could be, after all the time of ineptitude, awkwardness and utter incompetence, a “Kamala Harris Moment” as she flew to Europe to confront the crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. You could almost see Cillizza rubbing his worry beads of concern in “Is this, finally, Kamala Harris’ moment?”
Kamala has had a difficult first year in her role as vice president.
Harris was plagued with staff resignations and unanswered questions about her fit for the job. Harris struggled to find her political footing.It’s not unusual. Vice President is an extremely difficult job that can sometimes be thankless.
Harris’s Wednesday trip to Europe, amid ongoing Russian aggression into Ukraine, suggests that Harris may be about to have her moment.
Harris could find a way to get through this difficult time with Poland as well as Ukraine’s ongoing push for a no fly zone. This would represent a huge win, and not just for Harris but the entire Biden administration.
Harris, despite her title as vice-president, has only had a handful of these during her tenure.
Harris had an awful year, in part due to the fact that she seemed so unprepared for the tasks. But maybe things will change on Harris’s latest European trip…or so Cillizza hopes desperately:
Foreign policy and diplomacy are, in general, the responsibility of the executive. These are not missions that can be assigned to a House or Senate member. This is a unique job that a president or vice president can do.
This is important because Harris’ performance and record in office are so significant that it is impossible to not mention her future prospects as a presidential candidate, in 2024 or 2028, if Biden does not run. This is the place where politicians can prove themselves and convince voters that they are worthy to lead the United States.
Harris desperately needs an opportunity to prove that she can take on the job of top executive. Harris needs those moments not often but this trip was one.
As if it were an episode from the West WingKamala Harris and the challenge would be met with flying colors, possibly even negotiating a peaceful solution between Russia (and Ukraine) leaving everyone in awe at her amazing diplomatic skills. It would be impossible to expect less of an Aaron Sorkin script, which was intended to bring liberals and Democrats victory in the end.
Cillizza, however, was doomed to fall prey to harsh realities that diverged sharply from the feel-good script, as you can see below in this cringeworthy Kamala Harris moment after arriving in Poland.
