CNN Slimes the NRA: They Only Support Gun Rights for White People

On Thursday night’s CNN Tonight anchor Laura Coates went on an unhinged rant over the battle in Congress to renew the so-called “Violence Against Women Act” (VAWA). Coates also lashed out at the National Rifle Association (NRA) for blocking the “boyfriend loophole” which would prevent someone who is convicted of a misdemeanor or felony from owning a firearm regardless of whether the couple are living together or not.

“It’s frankly unbelievable that we even need to have a Violence Against Women Act, but we do. It’s also unbelievable that the Violence Against Women Act was allowed to expire in 2018, but it did” Coates huffed at the beginning of her rant.

She went on the wail that the NRA opposes VAWA because “they opposed a limitation on gun ownership in general, even in spite of the obvious truth, that it made women and children more vulnerable to violence, more vulnerable to abuse, and more likely to be killed by their abuser who would now have the means to kill.”

Continuing on her venomous attack on the NRA Coates kvetched “times like this remind us that it is increasingly becoming a government of the lobbyists, by the special interests. Coates screamed “times like this remind us that it is becoming a government of the lobbyists, by special interests. And even when it means violence against women persists, I guess just as long as you don’t upset the apple cart of the NRA.”

If you thought she couldn’t go any lower she then suggested “lawful gun owners like maybe Amir Locke or Philando Castile killed by police officers in my home state of Minnesota. They don’t prioritize those causes, apparently. It is legal to carry a gun, and notify the police if the vehicle you don’t drive in is stopped. I’m not sure this is the right case for us in the NRA.”

In case you didn’t get that, Locke and Castile are two black men who were killed with guns in their possession. Coates suggested the NRA doesn’t want black people to exercise their Second Amendment rights. Yet according to her, the NRA is perfectly fine with defending the rights of a white “convicted stalker who wants to carry a gun for the next time he violates a restraining order.”

LAURA COATES – It is truly unbelievable that we need a Violence Against Women Act. But we have. The Violence Against Women Act expired in 2018 which is also amazing. In a political environment like this, it is unbelievable it took so long to find a way of strengthening the act. It is unconscionable that the NRA was involved in this process.

Why? It was because they were against a loophole known simply as the boyfriend loophole. It is what? It is currently a law that prohibits anyone from possessing or owning guns if they are convicted. Senators tried to make this prohibition more applicable to married partners. They also wanted to apply it to couples who lived together or share children. But they did not want to exclude those who were dating, stalkers or are subject to protection orders. It wasn’t liked by the NRA. The NRA opposed any restriction on guns in general. Despite the fact that this made children and women more susceptible to violence and abuse and would make them more likely to die from their abusers who now had the ability to kill, they didn’t like it.

As a domestic violence prosecutor, I have seen this many times. The first question we’d ask is whether a firearm should be permitted to be kept in one’s possession. It would seem that you’d wonder if the NRA or women and children, who are protected from violence by law, should be more in power in negotiations. We talk a lot in this country about wanting a government that is of the people, by the people, and for the people. However, times like these remind us of how it has become a government of lobbyists and special interests. It is a government that exists for the love and profit of money. It doesn’t mean violence against women will stop. But as long you don’t upset the NRA’s apple cart, the little ladies may be able to sit down.

Maybe altruism doesn’t suit you. Perhaps you see only the bottom line. Okay, now what? Remember that $230million was paid by the Air Force to families and survivors who lost loved ones in the mass shooting at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs in 2017. On Monday a federal judge found the military was mostly at fault, for failing to report the shooter’s domestic violence-related convictions to the FBI, which could have prevented him from purchasing the semiautomatic rifle that he used in that mass shooting. Did you know he shot more than 450 bullets into the church? 26 people were also killed by him, including one pregnant woman. The NRA responded in a surprising manner. The NRA responded by proving that a good man with a gun can stop a bad guy. The bad guy who had the gun should not have it.

This loophole is supported by NRA, but it’s still a good idea. However, what will this mean? Lawful gun owners, like Philando Castile or Amir Locke, may be killed by Minnesota police officers. These are not the causes that they prefer. Legally carrying a firearm and notifying the police when you’re pulled over in a car that isn’t yours? This is not the case in which we should be acting as NRA members. Unbedded man jolted by a blanket

Wake up to a no knock warrant being executed even though it was not intended for him. We don’t have the resources, nor the time. An convicted stalker wants to have a gun in case he is restraining ordered. Ding, ding, ding, ding. This is in line with the mission statement. It is also the reason Congress was stopped from accomplishing its mission for three years. America, this is quite an assertion. You can rest your case.
