The mission of a Catholic college in Pennsylvania has been clearly defined.
Villanova University issued a guideline for its faculty and staff. It includes an instruction on gender inclusion.
This directive identifies a major recent change.
Villanova allowed all students, faculty and staff to choose their first names and personal pronouns starting in spring 2022. [the administrative system]. On class lists and other communication from universities, the chosen first name and personal pronoun will be displayed.
We now move onto moral management
This guide introduces Villanova faculty and staff to best practices for being gender-inclusive in our work spaces, laboratories, and classrooms — especially for those who identify within transgender, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, and/or gender-questioning communities.
This handbook aims to answer important questions.
- How do we create a gender-inclusive environment for teaching and working?
- What can be done to encourage full participation of people of all genders?
We’ve reached an unprecedented place in society. Until very recently, no one had a “gender.” There was sex, and that was all; how one presented or perceived oneself was category-free. However, society has suddenly decided to vote: Now there will be another column for identity.
As if everybody was being told to choose a particular geometric shape. If you’re a rhombus, let us know. All triangles should make it clear whether they’re scalene, equilateral, or isosceles.
Instead, we’ve been given “gender.” And Villanova’s ready to adapt.
Tell your staff what shapes you have:
You can model an inclusive gender approach by becoming a role model.
You should be intentional in how you address people and introduce yourself. This includes using gender-inclusive language like “everyone,” “people,” or “folks” rather than gender binary language like “ladies and gentlemen.” It’s also helpful to model using people’s pronouns and to state your own pronouns when you introduce yourself, including in your syllabus and email signature.
Employees are also told to “add a Gender Inclusion statement to [any] syllabus or new employee orientation materials.”
A syllabus statement should provide students with guidance about the use and misuse of pronouns in class and a definition for gender inclusion. Your reasons for including gender-inclusive teaching strategies should be explained if possible.
In Villanova’s view, the new category is critically academic:
Gender inclusivity is crucial within our diversity mission to “commit ourselves to cultivating an academic environment marked by genuine curiosity about different perspectives, ardent receptivity to knowledge generated through intercultural connections and a genuine sensitivity to the variety of human experiences marked by domestic and global differences.”
It’s an especially curious evolution for a religious school. However, faith is finding its way to wakefulness with fervent determination.

What’s the general aim of a modern Catholic college? Villanova emphasizes one crucial element:
Remind yourself and others that gender inclusivity is fundamental to Villanova’s mission.
Perhaps the school will now update its history and science departments.
