Christian Church Will Host Drag Show for Youth Ages 12-18 – Opinion

American Christianity has made great strides.

Case in point: On May 21st, Florida’s Naples United Church of Christ will host a “Youth Pride Conference.”

This flyer outlines planned activities.

  • Starter and main course
  • Breakout sessions
  • Panel Discussion
  • Isaac Salazar, (LGBT Network), Zebra Coalition Keynote Address
  • Drag Show

The seminar serves as “an exploration of LGBTQ-related issues facing today’s youth,” and the ad invites “youth ages 12-18.”

Initially, pickup points were assigned to local schools.

From original coverage by Florida’s Voice:

[Registrants]You will need to provide your pronouns and the school name to receive free transportation to Immokalee or Golden Gate Middle Schools.

However, the inclusion caused some controversy.

Florida’s Voice reached out to Collier County Schools on why transportation is being permitted directly from school property to a LGBTQ drag show. When informed of the event organizer’s plans to shuttle students from school property, the district said Collier County public schools may not be used as “transit points for the pickup and drop-off of students for this event.“

“The District was never informed nor contacted about this event. CCPS [Collier County Public Schools]The event is held in a private venue and is sponsored by no one. CCPS also neither authorized nor approved the transportation of CCPS students to and from district school sites by the event organizers. Any inference to the contrary is fully rejected by CCPS,” they said.

To this end, CCPS has spoken with the event organizer and explained that the information on the registration form, and any associated flyer, must be immediately corrected to reflect that CCPS is not a co-sponsor nor will it allow its school sites to be used as transit points for the pickup and drop-off of students for this event.”

The subsequent sign-up page’s disclaimer:

This event will be hosted by [Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN)]Collier is not associated with Naples United Church of a Christ, Collier County Public Schools or any other church. GLSEN Collier is a non-profit that works to ensure that marginalized students have a safe, inclusive environment.

The church is increasingly involved in gay, lesbians, bisexual, or transgender cultures.

According to its website, Naples United embraces “social responsibility”

Naples UCC is a congregational Church. This means all members are expected to participate and lead in the ministry of the church. Being a UCC church means that we are able to accept both the challenges and the mutual responsibility of being part of many UCC churches who advocate personal and collective accountability in living the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Recent responses from the House of Worship to Gov. Ron DeSantis’s signing of the Parental Rights in Education bill:

The latest attack already has a chilling impact on LGBTQ+ youth who are already victims of bullying, harassment and discrimination. The “Don’t Say Gay” bill is an exclusionary curriculum ban that deprives LGBTQ+ youth of the opportunity to see themselves reflected in the classroom and their non-LGBTQ+ peers from learning about LGBTQ+ communities. Based on more 20 years of research from GLSEN, LGBTQ+ teens who attended schools with an inclusive curriculum had higher GPAs. A greater sense of belonging and are more likely be able to continue their education.

The same holds true for education, community, as well as the Christian church’s progress.
