Chief Electrician on Baldwin Movie Blames Armorer and Producers for ‘Negligence’ – Opinion

A lot of people have been commenting on the tragedy on the “Rust” set and what should and should not have been done in regard to gun safety.

But now the chief electrician — the gaffer — who said he was great friends with the cinematographer who was killed, Halyna Hutchins, is speaking out and he’s laying blame at the the feet of multiple people.

Serge Svetnoy posted lengthy Facebook posts detailing his feelings about the tragedy. He said he was standing “shoulder to shoulder” with Hutchins when she was shot and “holding her in my arms while she was dying.” So he said, “I want to tell my opinion on why this has happened. I think I have the right to do it.”

It’s the fault of negligence and unprofessionalism.

It was the negligence of the person responsible for checking the weapon at the site. The person required to declare that the gun was there did not.

The DEATH OF THE HUMANITAR IS THE RESULT

I’m sure that we had the professionals in every department, but one – the department that was responsible for the weapons. It is impossible for a woman aged twenty-four to be an armory professional. Her friend, who is more or less the same age, cannot be a professional in this area.

Svetnoy clearly is going all-out to find Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the head armorer of the set at 24, and is pursuing him relentlessly. But he’s also pointing a finger at other people there who were involved in the chain of custody of the gun. He also introduces the allegation that there was a “friend” of Gutierrez-Reed’s who was involved in the process as well.

Svetnoy declared that he was “calling out to the Producers.”

In order to save money sometimes you might hire unqualified people for complex and hazardous jobs. This puts you at risk of losing the lives and friendships of people close by.

While I can understand your desire to fight for the budget’s best interests, you must not allow it to be denied. Every department should have at least one person who is knowledgeable about the work. This is essential to prevent a similar tragedy as the one with Halyna.

It is not my intention for anyone else to experience what I did, or what @Matt Hutchins, her husband, and Andros, went through. The same goes for Alec Baldwin who was given a gun while on set. Unprofessional people have caused him to take the life of another human being.

Dear Producers: By hiring professional staff, you can buy peace of mind both for you and your family. While it may cost more to hire professionals, and they can also be more difficult at times, the investment is worthwhile. The LIFE of the individual is not worth the penny saved!

And finally, dear Producers, please remember that it’s not you who are giving the opportunities to the people you hire make their money; it’s the people you hire who help You make Your money. This is important!

There are 12 producers listed on IMDB for the film. Alec Baldwin ranks at the top. Svetnoy doesn’t specifically call him out and indeed he sort of shows him some mercy. However, he’s also a producer. While this is still being investigated and we’ll have to see where the facts lie, any prior knowledge of issues and the failure to address them is going to lie heavily on anyone who should have known or had responsibility.

Interestingly, while the LA Times ran Svetnoy’s letter and describes it as blaming the producers, they don’t note what one would think to be a salient fact — that Baldwin is a producer.
