CBS Reports Biden Told by Ukraine Pres to Dial Back Rhetoric, ABC/NBC Ignore

With the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continuing to escalate, President Joe Biden had a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in which he was told by the Ukrainian leader to dial back the rhetoric of the possibility of an imminent invasion. As expected, ABC World News TonightNBC and NBC Nightly NewsDuring their reporting, they ignored the fact. 

Although all the other evening news channels covered the conversation, CBS was the only broadcaster to report the story. Evening News covered the request from Zelensky for Biden to cool his rhetoric. Norah O’Donnell reported on the Ukraine’s worsening situation. “that in the last 24 hours, there’s been an increased Russian buildup of troops on the Ukraine border.” 

O’Donnell asked Holly Williams from CBS for her report on conflict at the Ukraine/Russian frontier and an update about the Biden/Zelensky conversations. Williams answered O’Donnell’s question. What are our current insights into President Biden’s conversation with Ukraine’s President?Williams reported then that CBS News Tonight: A source says that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelesky asked the U.S. not to rehash its warnings about an invasion, because he doesn’t want panic.

 

 

NBC continues to air the show. Nightly NewsRichard Engel, the chief foreign correspondent for Biden/Zelensky reported on the phone conversation. However there was no mention that Zelensky had told Biden to get it done.

President Biden called Ukraine’s President Zelensky who’s receiving U.S. While the weapons were not in question, President Biden repeated his assurance that no American troops will be heading his way. Biden also pledged economic support during the phone call. 

ABC’s World News TonightNBC was also guilty with Ian Pannell, senior foreign correspondent for NBC, mentioning the call and failing to mention Biden’s embarrassing request: 

Today’s President Biden speaks to Ukraine’s President Zelensky to reiterate America’s support for Ukraine and its willingness to take decisive action if Russia invades Ukraine. We know that the Presidents of both countries have different opinions on this possibility. However, I must say tonight that after weeks of diplomatic diplomacy there is no indication of an end to the crisis.

NORAH O’DONNELL: And we learned today that in the last 24 hours, there’s been an increased Russian buildup of troops on the Ukraine border. U.S. Military also named the ten U.S. The U.S. Military has named the ten U.S. bases where 8500 soldiers are currently on high alert for deployment to Eastern Europe. Holly Williams, CBS News correspondent from Kyiv reports.

HOLLY WILLIAMS. The US insists that Russia has the ball now and Moscow continues its construction near Ukraine’s northern border in Belarus today for what it claims are military drills. Russia demands security guarantees. This includes the removal of NATO forces in Eastern Europe, and an end to Ukraine’s membership. NATO and the U.S. Allies claim they are unable to agree. Yesterday’s written reply was sent by the American ambassador in Russia. The Kremlin stated that America had not responded to its primary concerns. It compared the current situation with the Cold War. The Ukrainian people have lived with Russian aggression over many years. These essential military personnel are receiving military training and schoolchildren in Kyiv learning about threats to their lives. The faithful worship at St. Michael’s gold-domed monastery for more than 900 years. Some Ukrainians spoke up at the early morning service to pray for peace. I hope God talks some sense into Russia said this woman, and this 60-year-old man told us he’ll willingly take up arms to defend his country.

LESTER HOLT: A new concern regarding the Ukraine crisis. Pentagon claims that Russia has sent more troops to the border within the past 24 hours. Richard Engle, along with Ukrainian troops is at the frontlines tonight.

RICHARD ENGEL. Russia may have used this to show it did not like America’s written responses to Russia’s demand for NATO’s withdrawal from Eastern Europe. Live-fire drills in Ukraine are underway, as well as more flights into Belarus and naval exercises at the Baltic Sea. President Biden called Ukraine’s President Zelensky who’s receiving U.S. While the weapons were not in question, President Biden repeated his assurance that no American troops will be heading his way. President Biden promised additional economic assistance during the conference call. Surprisingly, troops remain calm at the front lines of Ukraine in the East. Surveillance. Many seem to follow their government’s lead, so there is no reason to worry. Valentine said that they are happy and in no trouble. Ukraine was in low-level warfare in the East for 8 years. This has led to emptying of so-called ghost towns. Here used to be 3000 people. Three women were found. None of us want Putin to invade. Ukraine is where we live. We don’t need Russia, says Tatiana. Russia has a massive force of around 120,000 troops and many more intelligence officials are predicting that this number will rise in the coming weeks. NATO is trying show unity in its support for Ukraine but it has divisions. Germany is refusing to send combat arms, but instead sending 5,000 helmets. DAVID MUIR : The tensions over Ukraine with Russia. Today, President Biden speaks with Zelinsky, the Ukrainian president. According to the White House, President Biden reiterated the willingness of America and its allies in order to continue the dialogue. The U.S. responded in writing to Russia’s requests. Russia received a new response from the U.S., refusing to make a promise to Ukraine that it would never be able to join NATO. Tonight, our Ukrainian senior correspondent Ian Pannell is back.

IAN Pannell: Russia’s military show tonight. Additional videos are being released of military drills. This is the Baltic Sea, where these naval light fire drills are being held. A few kilometers away from eastern Ukraine’s border are army exercises that include tanks and artillery.

JOHN KIRBY – We see an increase in combat power.

PANNELL: Vladimir Putin now has America’s written reply to Moscow’s security requirements. The U.S. Rejecting Putin’s demand that Ukraine be blocked from joining NATO. Today, Sergey Lavrov, the Foreign Minister, stated there has been no positive reaction to the main issue of this document. However, he said that there are other reasons for us to continue talking. Russia claims that President Putin will respond quickly, while the Kremlin maintains these are only exercises. It has no plans of crossing the border. U.S. diplomats worry that they may attack any moment. Here is where conflict can begin, if it is ever to occur. The country’s east. General Pavlov  commands 50,000 troops here and believes they’re ready to stand and fight. Putin insists that he has no plans to invade. General Biden says that it is a fabrication, and Putin has been planning to invade Ukraine for many years. David Biden, the President of America, speaks to President Zelensky, Ukraine, tonight. Even though we know very differently the views of President Biden on that possibility, it is clear tonight after weeks and weeks of diplomacy that there is still no sign that this crisis is abating.
