To say the NBA’s relationship with the office of the President of the United States has been complicated over the past half-decade is an understatement.
The White House welcomed the Milwaukee Bucks, the current NBA champion, to the White House Monday. It was a return of an American sporting tradition, with the winner of each NBA, NFL and NHL seasons visiting the White House. Trump had repeatedly criticized the NBA’s players for their anti-American positions on social justice, respecting voting rights, and equality.
It’s no secret that the NBA consistently promotes values that have roots in communism and other anti-American philosophies, and that they all hated Trump for calling them out for their woke ideologies. This is why every team since the 2017 Golden State Warriors declined to visit the White House as long as Trump was in office (the Warriors did visit Washington D.C. after their 2018 title run, but chose to meet with Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama, instead).
But now that there’s a President who values the same cancerous philosophies the NBA does, everything is sunshine and rainbows for at least another four years.
Biden praised the Bucks for their work in being a megaphone for “unity” in the turbulent summer of 2020.
“In sport and in a democracy, unity perhaps is the most elusive thing and the most necessary thing,” Biden said. But that’s what this team is. They’re united. This is who we are collectively.
However, America has failed to unite through anything the Bucks did in last summer.
All of the team were in an uproar when they heard about Jacob Blake’s shooting at Kenosha in Wisconsin on August 23, 2020. The players were clearly outraged at the shooting of a black man by a white police officer, as this automatically indicates that the cop was racist looking to kill blacks. The narrative was perpetuated that whites inherently are bad, and blacks are constantly oppressed.
Rusten Shesky however, the officer that shot Blake, was released after surveillance video showed Blake reaching for a knife as he was being detained.
The Bucks ought to have waited until they were able to start crying foul. Instead, they caused division and now are getting applauded from one of the greatest men in the world.
Furthermore, fawned over the Bucks for being strong supporters of the COVID jab: “You encouraged fans to get vaccinated,” Biden said. “I want to express my gratitude.”
It seems that the White House will be inviting the upcoming NBA champions to have an easier time. It seems their shared humanity will be due to being as anti-American and as tolerant as they can.
