You should know that there are alternatives if you or your partner want to travel abroad in the future.
The Biden administration is a compliment, and you can help your nonbinary person to paint the globe.
Starting April 11th, Americans may list “X” as the gender on their passports.
The big announcement was made by the State Department Wednesday night — on the verge of March 31st, the Transgender Day of Visibility.
In the past, being “seen” wasn’t a cultural concept. But these days, we appear to be told that anyone who isn’t pointed out doesn’t exist.
“The #TransDayofVisibilityThis is an acknowledgement of the fact that Trans people can be seen. They are present and visible members of society. It is a wayOf trying to nullify the systemic erasure of Trans people…” @drevantaylor of @ufvswhs. https://t.co/TNLyhpHy56 pic.twitter.com/qnHZfbufRL

America’s new passports will act as permanent ink — there’s no erasure.
Jessica Stern — appointed by Joe Biden as the U.S. Special Envoy to Advance the Human Rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex (LGBTQI+) Persons — celebrated a forward March:
“The addition of a third gender marker propels the U.S. forward toward ensuring that our administrative systems account for the diversity of gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics among U.S. citizens.”
At the same time, it’s nothing new:
“The issuance of X gender markers on U.S. passports does not create new definitions nor rights. This policy change recognizes the true identity of the passport holder.”
NBC News reported that the State Department indicated in June last year it planned to offer a third option for gender.
In October, it issued the very first “X” passport — an X-port, if you will.

The event marks a major milestone in the lives of intersex and nonbinary Americans. These people are approximately 1.2 million and 4,000,000, respectively according to interACT and the Williams Institute, an intersex advocacy organisation. There has been an increase in intersex, gender-nonconforming, and nonbinary people coming out in the recent years. But most were unable to obtain identifications that correctly reflect who they are due to state laws.
Jessica celebrated Wednesday’s improved accuracy.
“[People]You do not have to fit into a specific gender in order to be accepted around the globe. The lived realities of transgender, intersex, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming persons reflect that there is a wider spectrum of humanity than is represented by a binary sex designation on passports.”
We’re living in a wetter world — previously, individuals were dryly ID’d. Humans weren’t given any concept of appearance or self-perception. They were scientifically sorted. Your chromosomally classified, but nobody really cared.
Presently, we’re getting to show our sparkle. In a world of online avatars, your passport — like your pronouns — is falling into line.
And it’s been a long time coming:
A long legal battle preceded the availability of a gender neutral option for U.S. passports. Dana Zzym is an intersex Colorado resident that uses gender-neutral pronouns. In 2015, the State Department denied her a passport because they failed to verify whether the application was male or female.
According to court documents, Zzyym (pronounced Zimm) wrote “intersex” above the boxes marked “M” and “F” and requested an “X” gender marker, instead, in a separate letter.
The State Department’s denial of Zzyym’s passport prevented them from being able to travel to a meeting of Organization Intersex International in Mexico.
Like wayfarers crossing borders, we’re taking a trip from the restrictive ways of old. Ladies and gentlemen and X’s, enjoy your vacation. Make it an especially adult endeavor — your travels are now Rated X.
