One of the downsides of a 24/7 news cycle is that it allows far more time for media types to fill airspace with bad takes, as was recently the case during Univision’s coverage of the horrific school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
You can watch it here Linea de Fuego host Luis Carlos Vélez introduces a debate on gun control by weirdly associating the defense of the Second Amendment to radical Islam:
LUIS CARLOSVELEZ: Radical Muslims. For example, radical Muslims follow the Quran up to the T. Quran forbids women to wear black. It also says women should not be dressed entirely in black. The Quran has some historical reasons, but this is due to their nomadic lifestyle. This introduction is to say that we have seen and realized this to be extremism. Is there any reason for following to the T, and sticking to the Second Amendment? Franklin?
FRANKLIN CAMAMARGO: Yes. This Second Amendment was created to provide protection for citizens against the government. It allows you to defend your rights in case a totalitarian government attempts to use force or violate your personal rights. It also gives honest citizens the right to protect themselves against criminals who do not respect the law. There is ample evidence to support this. According to estimates, self-defense was used nearly 1.6 million times last year.
The last time we took note of Vélez, he was blasting President Joe Biden on inflation. Vélez’ odd take betrays the industrywide anti-gun biases that pervade Spanish-language media, and their inability to wrap their collective heads around anything other than gun bans.
Franklin Camargo’s response, however, obliterates that terrible segue and very clearly articulates why the Second Amendment exists in a way never before heard, to my recollection, on Spanish-language media. Camargo moves on to defensive gun use which is sometimes overlooked in discussion of shooting statistics. Note: Franklin hails from Venezuela and is a subject matter expert in the effects on citizen disarmament, which is NEVER covered on Spanish-language media.
