“Please be aware that there’s a fatphobic ‘joke’ front & center in the movie.”
Even as “Avengers: Endgame” has literally brought unprecedented joy to American moviegoers, “social justice warriors” have found reasons to be upset.
The latest Marvel blockbuster shattered box office records, earning $1.2 million worldwide in just five days, and $350 million in the United States alone. Fully 90 percent of Americans who went to the theater over the weekend chose the movie.

At the same time, the Rotten Tomatoes score for the grand finale of the Avengers franchise was a robust 95 percent. Critics Consensus: “Exciting, entertaining, and emotionally impactful, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ does whatever it takes to deliver a satisfying finale to Marvel’s epic Infinity Saga.”
It’s clear that socially conscious liberals were among those who lined up for the cinematic experience – because many of them later shared indignant thoughts and feelings about the experience. Their collective complaints were threefold:
1. “Representation”: After much hype and anticipation, the movie unveiled the first openly LGBT character in the Marvel universe. The historic moment came when director Joe Russo made a cameo as a gay man who was bemoaning the loss of his lover in Thanos’ semi-apocalypse at the end of last year’s “Avengers: Infinity War.”
While some people cheered the gesture as a step forward in “pride march” of progress, many woke commenters were disappointed. For them, it was too little, too late.

On Monday, “Captain Marvel” herself, Brie Larson, complained that Marvel need to “move faster with this stuff.”
2. “Fat shaming”: At the beginning of “Avengers: Endgame,” Thor is fat. He’s been eating and drinking his emotions ever since Thanos pillage his universe, and hence is unprepared when he’s summoned to Avengers headquarters for a new mission.
The movie plays the sight of a Germanic god with a beer belly for laughs, and for some sensitive viewers, that was simply too much to countenance. A number of Twitter users issued public warnings lest those with body image issues be triggered.

Outraged hot-takes appeared in a number of well-trafficked news outlets, including The Daily Dot, Cosmopolitan, and Vanity Fair. Body positivity activist Lacey-Jade Christie wrote a column for The Guardian on Tuesday describing herself as “shocked, angry and hurt” by the movie’s “fatphobia.”
“Sitting in that movie theatre, watching the fatphobic jokes roll through at the expense of a veteran with mental health issues and listening to the subsequent laughter broke my heart,” she said.
3. Capitalism: Sen. Bernie, I-Vt., was as usual laser-focused on the supposed sins of America’s titans of industry. The Democratic presidential candidate suggested in a tweet on Monday that Disney use all its profits from “Avengers: Endgame” to pay rank-and-file workers, rather than to benefit the company’s top-level executives.
What would be truly heroic is if Disney used its profits from Avengers to pay all of its workers a middle class wage, instead of paying its CEO Bob Iger $65.6 million – over 1,400 times as much as the average worker at Disney makes. https://t.co/NrcFSk4LZc

Progressive supporters quickly seconded the call.

While Hollywood has proved more than willing to accommodate liberal sensibilities when it seems symbolic or profitable, Sanders might have to wait to impose wealth redistribution by executive fiat.
