Another Shocking Victory Happened in Texas Last Night and Suggests 2022 Doom for Democrats – Opinion

Other elections took place across the nation, even though all eyes were focused on Virginia, where Republican Glenn Youngkin won a huge upset. Candidates for local offices and state districts along with referendums on things like defunding the police occurred in places like Texas, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, and there’s a big upset in Texas that suggests doom is coming for Democrats in 2022.

It happened in San Antonio. Republican John Lujan was victorious over Democrats in the majority-Hispanic area that Democrats won by double-digits.

Here’s a report on the results from the San Antonio Report.

Republican John Lujan beat Democrat Frank Ramirez on Tuesday in a special election for Texas House District 118. He regained the seat he had in 2016.

Ramirez was a former firefighter and businessman who ended the night with 286 votes more than Ramirez. As expected, the runoff would be tight. Ramirez had a small lead in absentee and early voting at the start of the evening. Lujan was awarded 51.2%.

That’s a 15% shift toward the GOP since 2020. It was the district where Donald Trump lost 2016 and seemed to be heavily blue, just like San Antonio and Austin. Lujan managed to challenge the accepted wisdom and won the support of the vast majority Hispanic voters.

What this shows us, along with recent Republican victories at the Rio Grande Valley is that some assumptions about demographics favoring Democrats may be outdated. Many speculate, for example that Youngkin may have won the Hispanic vote completely in Virginia. There is a lot of movement in the area of minority voting, and not just from black voters but from all segments of the voter population.

The lesson is actually twofold. First, Republicans are able to demand that illegal immigration be stopped and yet still work well with Hispanics. This is contrary to the established wisdom. Republicans are mistaken, however. They have reacted reflexively to the assumption that the GOP’s growing Hispanic population was somehow bad. People are individuals and issues have more importance than race politics.

To wrap all this up, the results in Texas last night are just horrific news for Democrats going into next year’s election. Their whole schtick revolves around identity and promoting divisions between minorities, and they’re just increasing that focus. If anything close to a majority of Hispanic voters continue to reject that message, we aren’t just looking at a red wave next year but a red tsunami.

Republicans must continue fighting for causes that inspire support. The Hispanic vote, after many years of hopelessness, is now available and could strengthen GOP majority for years.
