Woman Burns Boyfriend’s Face With Acid So That He’ll Have ‘No Other Choice But to Marry Her’

A 19-year-old Indian woman was arrested Sunday for allegedly committing an acid attack against her boyfriend in an attempt to disfigure his face and keep him from leaving her. 

The man, 24, was splashed with chemicals while riding a scooter through New Delhi, CNN-News18 reported. He was later admitted to the hospital with burns on the right side of his face.

When questioned by police, the man pointed to acquaintances of his girlfriend, and police said they initially suspected she was the target. However, they interrogated the girlfriend on Sunday and became suspicious when she tried to evade questions and gave misleading answers.

The woman eventually broke down and confessed that she had covertly splashed her boyfriend with household cleaning chemicals in an attempt to keep him from leaving her. After three years of dating, the woman was ready to get married but the man wanted to break up.

“She decided to throw some chemical and deface her partner, leaving him with no other choice but to marry her,” an officer told News18.

Neither the officer nor the couple were identified by name.

The woman told police that she had stashed the bottle of chemicals in her purse and, at one point in their trip, asked her boyfriend to remove his helmet, complaining that the strap was bothering her. Then, when he wasn’t looking, she threw the chemicals at him.

Doctors are woking to determine what exactly was in the bottle.

An acid attack that shows women aren’t the only victims

Women are the primary targets of domestic violence, and the #MeToo movement has drawn renewed attention to the ways that men oppress and abuse women. However, a large number of men face domestic violence, too, and their experiences are often dismissed. In the United States, one in seven adult men have endured “severe” domestic violence, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

Last week, a Florida woman was jailed after police accused her of squeezing her live-in boyfriend’s testicles so hard they bled.
