ABC’s GMA Skips Jill Biden’s DISASTROUS Comment Comparing Latinos to Tacos

After the Monday evening broadcast network newscasts ignored First Lady Jill Biden’s offensive language comparing Latinos to tacos in a video first uncoveredJorge Bonilla is our own Jorge Bonilla. CBS Mornings and NBC’sTodayTuesday’s wildness saw him emerge with two minutes and six seconds of Biden time “taking some heat” For a line “many [found] incredibly offensive.”

ABC’s Good Morning America (GMAIt lived up to its name as a shallow newscast, largely lacking in actual journalism. ABC instead buried the story with an extensive report about its overnight programs. World News NowThis program airs on some East Coast markets between 2:00 and 4:00 am. America This Morning (which airs for roughly 30 minutes in the 4:00 a.m. hour).

CBS Mornings had a tease about Biden’s comment and then tacked on 81 seconds with correspondent Christina Ruffini following a previewing of President Joe Biden’s trip to the Middle East.

“Christine, lemme switch gears here. First Lady Jill Biden is taking some heat after people took offense at comments she made at a Latino rights event in Texas yesterday,” fill-in co-host Vladimir Duthiers said.

The clip was then shown by them. It came from Biden’s speech at UnidosUS conference in San Antonio.

We are able to see that this diversity is as diverse as both the Bronx and the flowers of Miami. It’s also as special as San Antonio’s breakfast tacos.

Duthiers were disgusted and resurfaced. They stated that “obviously equating tacos with the Latino community is the issue that many find incredibly offensive.”

Ruffini also noted the fact that comments are not all about themselves. “the timing is especially uneasy” since “Mexican President López Obrador is here today to meet with Mr. Biden.”

Ruffini did also make sure Jill got some cover by acquiescing to it “part of a prepared speech praising the work of a well-known activist” before ending with a statement from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) that said Latinos “should not be reduced to a stereotype.”

Duthiers said “that is exactly right,” but co-host and Democratic donor Gayle King rushed to Jill’s defense: “First Lady’s team probably [sic]Huddle today. Because when you know Jill Biden, that’s not who she is, but it didn’t come out correctly.”

“Didn’t come out correctly?” Please.

Over on NBC’s Today, fill-in co-host Tom Llamas had a 45-second extended brief on Biden “taking some heat” that included both the tacos comment and “mispronounc[ing]…cornerstores historically started by Latinos…known as bodegas.”

Llamas, like Ruffini, also highlighted the NAHJ statement. However, he did not highlight an entire section that stated that “using breakfast tacos to demonstrate the uniqueness of Latinos in San Antonio demonstrates a lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity.”

With GMA giving Jill Biden a boost by ignoring her comments instead swooning over deals on cruise ships in the first 45 minutes, ABC’s overnight shows were left to do real reporting.

Here’s a portion of the segment from America This Morning and World News Now co-host Mona Kosar Abdi, which included a shoutout to Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) spokeswoman Christina Pushaw (click “expand”):

By GMA not covering Jill Biden, ABC chose to prove Pushaw’s point for her.

VLADIMIR DUTHIERS Christine, let’s change gears. People took offense to comments First Lady Jill Biden made yesterday at a Texas Latino rights conference. Listen to her words.

BIDEN

DUTHIERS – All right. Christina: It is clear that many people find it offensive to equate tacos and the Latino community. How does the White House feel about it?

CHRISTINE RUFFINI: Yeah, no comment yet from the White House this morning and those comments come a day before Mexican President López Obrador is here today to meet with Mr. Biden, so the timing is especially uneasy. Look. These remarks by the First Lady were made as part of a prepared speech in which the speaker praised the achievements of a prominent activist. The National Association of Hispanic Journalists condemned it saying in part that Latinos “should not be reduced to a stereotype.” Vlad?

DUTHIERS Christina, we are very grateful.

GAYLE King: That is what we all believe.

DUTHIERS: Yeah. Absolutely.

KING. First Lady’s team is probably sitting around today.

DUTHIERS – Uhh…what do you think?

TOM LLAMAS While discussing Hispanic diversity, she incorrectly pronounced bodegas, the Latino word for cornerstones, which were originally started in New York by Latinos. This wasn’t the end.

JILL BIDEN – As distinctive as Bronx Bodegas and as gorgeous as Miami blossoms, but as distinct as San Antonio breakfast tacos.

LLAMAS: The National Association of Hispanic Journalists responded that, “using breakfast tacos to demonstrate the uniqueness of Latinos in San Antonio demonstrates a lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity.”
