ABC News on Tuesday blurred the lines between the network and the DNC talking points, cheering the “big win,” “big victory” for Joe Biden after the passage of a new spending bill. At Good Morning AmericaTheir excitement was overwhelming.
Guest co-host Gio Benitez hyped, “Now, we’re turning our attention to the White House.. Biden will sign today’s massive tax, health and climate bill into law. Now this is the largest climate investment in U.S. history.”
An on-screen graphic painted the same picture: “President Biden’s Big Victory: Set to Sign Inflation Reduction Act Into Law.” In case you weren’t sure how to feel about spending an additional $740 billion on climate and health care, Cecilia Vega explained, “It’s such a big win for President Biden, he’s actually interrupting his vacation and flying back to White House today just for this bill signing.”
Equating Democrats “saying” something with the truth, he continued:
This is how it works: $370 billion. These include tax credits for electric cars and solar panels. And Democrats claim that these incentives will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent compared to 2005 levels by the end the decade. What is the real question? The new taxes that are levied on large businesses and the increased enforcement of IRS laws for the riches will pay for this. This is a unique investment opportunity that the White House calls a “once-in-a generation” deal.
Was there Republican opposition? It was boiled down to a sentence from Vega: “We have heard this from Republicans and many experts who dispute by how much it’s actually going to help inflation.”
So ABC reporters have “heard” this from Republicans, but Benitez didn’t bother featuring any of these people. Instead, the journalist touted the need to see this all as a success: “The White House is really planning to capitalize on this one. They’re going to hit the road, the President and cabinet members going across the country trying to convince the American people that this is helping them.”

Good Morning America
8/16/2022
7.10 AM ETGIO BENITEZ (GIO BENITEZ): Now we’re turning now to a huge victory at the White House. The massive tax, health and climate bill is due to be signed by President Biden later today. It is currently the largest investment made by Americans in climate change. Cecilia Vega (our chief White House correspondent) has more information about how this bill will affect Americans. Hey, Cecilia. Good morning.
ABC GRAPHIC: President Biden’s Big Victory: Set to Sign Inflation Reduction Act Into Law
CECILIA VEGA: It’s such a big win for President Biden, he’s actually interrupting his vacation and flying back to White House today just for this bill signing. So let me show you what’s inside of it. You’re right, this is a large one. It’s estimated that $740billion is needed to cover the entire health care system. It’s going to help some 13 million Americans pay for insurance by expanding subsidies. Medicare recipients are entitled to limit prescription drug prices at 2,000 per year. Starting next year, Medicare beneficiaries will be eligible for $35 per month insulin. That’s that really expensive drug. It’s also, Gio, as you just said, climate investment in U.S. history.
This is how it works: $370 billion. These include tax credits for electric cars and solar panels. And Democrats claim that these incentives will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% compared to 2005 levels by the end the decade. What is the real question? The new taxes on large corporations and increased IRS enforcement of the wealthy will pay for this. This is a unique investment that the White House calls a “once-in-a generation” opportunity. The White House promises it will help Americans save money and reduce inflation. However, we’ve heard it from Republicans as well many experts that doubt its ability to reduce inflation. Robin, the White House really plans to take advantage of this opportunity. The White House and its cabinet members will travel across America trying to convince Americans that it is working for them. All of this is tied to the upcoming midterm elections.
ROBIN ROBERTS: And they’ll be here before we know it. As you all know, Cecilia. We are grateful.
