A Long Long Way to Go – Opinion

Regular readers will note I’ve been sharing these short “Moore to the Point” audio clips as mini-posts lately. Typically, I write up a short post, record the minute-long audio clip, then send it to “Joey V,” one of the producers at NewsTalkSTL, who packages it for airing on the station the next day. Then I pair it with the post I’ve already written, et voila: Short, sweet, and (Moore) to the point!

The latest was something I did slightly differently. I’d already written a longer post on the topic. So some of what I’m about to say will seem familiar to those who read that one — but there’s more (so much more) to say about this topic and I think (hope) readers will appreciate this added take.

Note: This “Moore to the Point” commentary aired on NewsTalkSTL on Saturday, May 7th. Below is the audio.

This week’s big news was about the Supreme Court’s leaked draft opinion. It indicated that Roe v. Wade may well be overturned — it’s caused quite an uproar. One of the things I have noticed in the discussion is that it’s almost always framed as women versus men — or women as this oppressed minority who need to stand up and fight back.

I’ve seen several references to the Helen Reddy song from 1972: “I Am Woman – Hear Me Roar!”

The problem is, there are. Many millionsAmerican women pro-life. You know what else? You can also roar.

There’s something else that’s interesting about that song. This is the fifth verse:

You can see me growing into a woman.
You can see me from toes to toes
As I spread my lovin’ arms across the land
But I’m still an embryo
We have a long, long way to go
Till I understand my brother

It’s a very interesting selection of words. How about changing those words a bit.

I am Mensch watch me grow…
But I’m still an embryo
We have a long, long way to go
Before I can make my Mother understand…
