The State of Disunion | Newsbusters

It is possible that you have lost the State of the Union Address by President Joe Biden last week. Biden was alone on Monday and wore a mask as he walked along the White House lawn. He walked in a group of House members on Tuesday and expressed his joy at the fact that no masks were necessary. The perfect metaphor for Biden in governance and Biden in speech.

Let’s first forgive Biden and all his mistakes. Biden is nearly 80 years old and suffers from a stuttering disorder. My experience with Stuttering as a child has made me more sympathetic. He’s not Cicero, Churchill or King. Joe is from Scranton. Problem was not in the message or words. Problem was in the message.

If you’re a moderate, Democrat leaning voter frustrated by Biden and interested in the GOP for November, the State of the Union speech was not intended for you. Biden is still trying to retain moderate voters despite all of the talking about multiple audiences.

For example, securing border security was a topic he mentioned. This is an area he hasn’t done anything with but which shows up as a problem in the polls for Democrats. He mentioned it. He also mentioned the funding of police. Another area where polls indicate that voters are more comfortable with Republicans than Democrats is funding police. It is important that he reassures suburban voters by not being the radicalist among the Democratic representatives.

He called Afghanistan an “extraordinary success,” but it polls terribly for him, so he chose not to spend time on it. After opening with a discussion about Ukraine, the entire speech sounded panicked and written by pollsters.

Biden and Democrats have a simple problem. The public will not forget this speech, if they don’t already remember it. However, empty stores and high fuel prices are still going to happen. These problems were ignored by the President. It’s now well-known that President Barack Obama’s COVID-19 relief plan sparked inflation; he not only defends it, but also calls for additional spending.

Biden opened his address with an unifying moment about Ukraine. Biden received applause both from the Republicans as well as Democrats. After that, he switched to attacking Trump’s tax cut with lies about the benefits for the top 1 percent. That was refuted by even the so-called fact-checkers.

He reiterated his call for Congress to adopt an agenda that Congress had repeatedly failed in passing and advocated positions which most Americans oppose. It was not a reset. He increased his support for progressivism. He increased his support for government growth. Instead of offering gas price relief, he announced that he would expand the Green New Deal.

The flubs are overrated. Forget the rhetorical stumbles over “Iranians” instead of “Ukrainians,” etc. Biden does this. Biden isn’t the greatest orator. He is not the best orator.

Biden presented Americans with a vision about what they have already rejected, and then ended the speech with pleas for unity.

After spending the past two years vilifying people who disagree with his agenda, it’s hard for Americans today to accept that they need to come to terms with their differences. Biden claimed that Americans opposing his agenda are on Jefferson Davis’s side, and the people who were not vaccinated were doomed to die. He now calls for unity, with 40% of the vote in certain polls. However, he did not offer an apology and did not retract his harsh comments. His turn was only after polling by Democrats leaked that showed the public is willing to move on.

The speech did not offer a reset. The speech did not offer a new vision. It did not offer new perspectives. It was clearly designed to rallie Democrats and possibly get moderates back in the camp.

Although the president might see a slight increase in polls due to Ukraine, the polling will be surpassed by high gas prices and empty shelves.
