David Frum has gone from being a speechwriter for President George W. Bush, to being a cable-news speech adviser for Joe Biden.
CNN appearance Day of the New on Tuesday morning, Frum advised Biden to stress two things in his SOTU tonight.
The first is to make a slur at Trump’s foreign strategy by using the Ukraine crisis.
“These events proved that America First is not the only thing worth defending. Our allies and friends are useless. It is important to have friends.
This is a great illustration of Trump’s foreign policy, and attempts to pressure NATO members to be more involved in the common defense.
Frum’s next suggestion was nakedly political. He suggested shifting the blame of inflation to Putin and accusing any politician that dares to mention it as hurting Ukraine.
“Biden must bring home the PresidentAmericans tend to spend more at the pumps, and Americans also pay more food. It was tight before, but it got worse.Putin is responsible for the increases in his income.Und Every politicianAny party that wDoing so is a disservice to Ukraine.
Nice tried to spin two parts of the Democratic party, David! Biden should shoulder the responsibility for inflation. This will silence those who believe Biden is responsible.
This won’t work because Americans already have enough inflation pain to see who the real culprit is. Good luck with silence of Biden critics. It is unlikely that anyone will believe it is “undermining Ukraine” to hold Biden accountable for his domestic failings.
CNN’s New Day featured David Frum, advising Biden to shift the blame for inflation from him to Putin in his State of the Union speech. This was partially sponsored by T-Mobile and Celebrity Cruises. Liberty Mutual also supported this advice.

Day of the New
3-1-22
7:16 am ETSUSAN PAGE [Zelenskyy]He rose to the occasion. He was both conversational as well as emotional. He was a person of the heart. He spoke from the heart, and he rallied. He was mobilising Ukrainians. He demanded that the European Parliament be established. Vladimir Putin was the message he was trying to convey. That is why I believe that President Biden needs to accomplish all of those things tonight. This will be in a State of the Uion Address that has been transformed, I would guess in the space of about a week. It isn’t the same laundry list of legislative priorities presidents give in State of the Union speeches. This speech will be different.
BRIANNA KEILAR : This gives him an opportunity, I believe, to frame it in a very large way. It makes me wonder what he will do.
DAVID FLUM: If asked by him, I will tell you what I think he should do. That, as Susan said, President Zelenskyy just provided President Biden with the thing that is always lacking from State of the Union speeches, or almost always: a frame. What am I saying? Do you know what I am trying to communicate? What message do I want to convey?
They are everywhere! Two things President Biden should emphasize tonight,I’m sure he will put in a lot of effort tonight.
First,These events are a complete sham to America’s false, idiotic notion of America First, America only, America alone is worthless. Having friends is irrelevant. We have witnessed the effectiveness of coordinated actions by the United States, its European partners, and its British and Canadian partners to downgrade the Russian economy. He should talk about tonight’s evidence. It is the testing proof of the strength of alliances and friendship. The power of international cooperation.
He should also warn Americans about the second goal I have hoped for. Putin’s strike was motivated by tightening energy and food markets. Russia, Ukraine, and other countries are important suppliers of energy and food. Putin had his chance because the price of food and energy were so high.
The price will rise because of this catastrophe. Therefore, President Biden must remind Americans that while they pay more to pump gas, and more money for food, the economy is already tight. But Putin has made the increase.Und Every politicianAny party Anyone who attempts to politicize the Americans’ sacrifices, regardless of their domestic or political motives, undermines Ukraine support.
KIER: He has to. These sanctions, which the U.S., western countries, have joined in unison, are also a double-edged sword. These sanctions will also hurt Americans at a time of high inflation. That sacrifice will have to be understood by him. While he can put it all on Russia, he will have to explain why to them.
