You know Joe Biden’s approval ratings are bad when even leftist media outlets like CNN are talking about it. Eventually, the news gets bad enough and becomes so blatantly obvious that the media are guilted into reporting on stories that they would otherwise sweep under the rug.
It was one such example. On Wednesday afternoon’s CNN Newsroom, co-hosts Alisyn Camerota and Victor Blackwell brought on CNN political director David Chalian to discuss the network’s poll showing Biden’s approval rating crashing to new lows. It’s a difficult assignment that few people at CNN want to do.
CNN reporter Chalian has analyzed the poll’s results with remarkable candor.
While 16% approve, more than twice as many, 34% disapprove, are the majority. The people who are disapproving of Joe Biden’s handling of his presidency as president have the most intensity. And that is because, as we all know, intense can sometimes be a driving force within American politics. This is an alarming sign. It is interesting to note that 33% of Democrats approve of him, which only about a third of his team at home. They must address this passion problem.
Perhaps showing how out of touch he and his fellow journos are, Chalian seemed stunned at the supermajority of Americans that disapprove of Biden’s stewardship of the economy:
The question we asked was, “Are these different things a big problem or minor problem for the economy?” 80%, major problem rising food costs. 79% believe that supply disruptions are a serious problem. 77% believe housing costs are a major problem. These are large majority of people who agree that the problems in today’s economy are serious. Take a look at Biden’s views on economic issues. On a variety of topics, we tested Biden’s approval rating. He has majority support for coronavirus only. 54% approval. He’s doing everything else that’s not necessary and has helped the middle class, and the economy.
Chalian has come a long way from his infamous comments on the eve of Joe Biden’s inauguration in which he gushed about how the lights at the Lincoln Memorial to commemorate the American’s who died of COVID were “almost extensions of Joe Biden’s arms embracing America!”
CNN deserves our discredit, as it was obvious how uncomfortably Alisyn Camerota & Victor Blackwell felt throughout the segment. It became clear that the two wanted good news for Biden all through the segment.
Camerota hoped to glean some historical context, wondering if other presidents were in a similarly bad position. Chalian said that her only consolation came from the fact that Donald Trump was the President with a lower approval rating at this time. “We know what happened in Donald Trump’s first midterms in 2018. Republicans lost. This is the concern Democrats have and why they’d like to see Biden boost his numbers in the weeks and months ahead before people head to the polls next fall.”
It’s safe to say CNN will work extra hard to help Biden’s approval ratings recover.

CNN Newsroom With Alisyn Camerona and Victor Blackwell

2:31.42 PMVICTOR BLACKWELL: A new CNN poll shows Americans’ attitudes towards the president and the economy less than one year before the midterm elections.
ALISYN CAMEROTA: President Biden’s approval rating is 49% right now. 51% disapprove. CNN Political Director David Chalian will be breaking down the figures for us. David, tell us about the disapproval and approval ratings.
DAVID CHALIAN (Yes). One thing we pay attention to, guys, is how intense people feel. Ask people if they approve strongly, moderately, or both. Do you disapprove of strongly? Look at this: 16% approve strongly and 34% disapprove strongly. The people who are disapproving of Joe Biden’s job as President see the intensity. And that is because, as we all know, intense can sometimes be a driving force within American politics. This is an alarming sign. It is interesting to note that 33% of Democrats approve of him, which only about a third of his team at home. They must address this passion problem.
BLACKWELL: Now let’s discuss the economy and the major concerns.
CHALIAN: Yeah. Take a look. Are these issues a problem major or minor in your economy? 80%, major problem rising food costs. All other things, including helping the middle class, and the economy. He has 45% approval. Majorities don’t approve.
CAMEROTA, Hmm. And David: How do you think the respondent to this poll view Biden’s economic policies?
CHALIAN: These may be the most worrying numbers for the White House, Alisyn. According to this poll, 45% say Biden’s policies have made the economy worse. 25% say no effect. 33% say that they have improved the conditions. Compare this with Barack Obama’s 2009 term. At the conclusion of Obama’s first term, there wasn’t a Democratic president. Remember, though unemployment was twice as high now than it is today, we did not see the same level of inflation. Only 28% of those polled said that Obama’s economic policies had worsened their financial conditions. There is an actual delta in this. Biden was cited as the beneficiary by 45%. This is a concern.
BLACKWELL: Hmm. What about the president’s leadership? Is that how Americans see it?
CHALIAN Do you believe Biden is a good leader? Or do you doubt him or have reservations about his leadership abilities? It’s 2-1 here. 66% of Americans are skeptical about Biden’s leadership. Third of Americans (34%) trust Biden’s leadership. Also, it is interesting to note that only 36% believe Biden as a leader in the home team. It’s there, it’s right in front of you. 36% of Democrats are skeptical. 75% of Independents are unsure. 92% of Republicans. These are the people who should support you nearly blindly. Even on their own turf, they have a lot of work ahead.
CAMEROTA: David can you provide some context to these numbers in the past?
CHALIAN: Yes, you can see that he’s not far behind his predecessors. At this stage, only Donald Trump had a lower overall approval rating than him at the beginning of his presidency. And then you’re at Biden. Now we all know what actually happened at Donald Trump’s first midterm election in 2018. Republicans lost. Democrats were unable to contain their concern and want to see Biden’s numbers rise in the months and weeks ahead of the next election.
BLACKWELL : This is very interesting. David Chalian: Thank you.
