Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said on Tuesday night that people are avoiding Chinese and other Asian restaurants because of racist fears of contracting the spreading coronavirus.
“Honestly, it sounds almost so silly to say, but there’s a lot of restaurants that are feeling the pain of racism,” the New York Democrat said in an Instagram Live video. “Where people are literally not patroning Chinese restaurants, uh, they’re not patroning Asian restaurants because of just straight up racism around the coronavirus.”
By “patroning,” Ocasio-Cortez apparently meant “patronizing.”

A number of liberal politicians, commentators and journalists have argued that referring to the coronavirus behind the COVID-19 outbreak by names that reference its origin in China is an act of ignorance or willful bigotry.
However, the American Council on Science and Health noted on Monday that “historically, microbiologists named new diseases after locations, animals or people,” including in the United States.

Also during her Instagram Live video, Ocasio-Cortez sought to comfort fellow supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont Independent, whose left-wing Democratic presidential campaign appeared doomed by his poor showing in Tuesday primary voting.
“The other thing to keep in mind is that if you are fighting for a progressive future, if you are fighting for everyday people, if you are fighting for working people, if you are fighting for health care as a right, there’s a lot of folks out there that want you to be demoralized. There’s a lot of folks out there that don’t want you to vote,” she said.
“And I think it’s important that if you’re feeling sad, if you’re feeling down, let yourself feel that way. But the No. 1 rule in politics, in my opinion, and in organizing in general, is to never, ever, ever, ever let your heart turn black.”
However, many online “Bernie bros” made clear they had no interest in being lectured to by the first-term congresswomen.

Biden appeared to have won at least four of the six states that went to the polls to decide which candidate the Democrats would put forward to take on Republican President Donald Trump in November.
In addition to Mississippi, Biden was named the winner of Missouri, Idaho and Michigan, the biggest prize of the night. The former vice president received overwhelming support from African-Americans and a strong advantage with suburban and rural white voters, putting him in a commanding position in the race.

Sanders, 78, scored a victory in North Dakota, while the last state, Washington, remained too close to call on Wednesday morning, according to exit polls by Edison Research.
In a victory speech Tuesday night in Philadelphia, Biden called for party unity and made an appeal to Sanders supporters.
“We share a common goal, and together we are going to defeat Donald Trump,” he said, thanking Sanders and his supporters for their energy and passion.
Sanders, who returned home to Vermont on Tuesday night, did not make a public statement after his losses, a departure from his usual practice on primary nights.
