Why Rompers are Making a Comeback

If you’re one of us who absolutely loved the romper in its heyday, but fear that it may have gone out of style, we’ve got some good news for you. The romper (or playsuit, if that’s the term you prefer) is back. Or rather, did it ever really go out of style? Either way, it’s here, and it’s here to say. If you’re curious and want to know more about how and why rompers are making a comeback, read on for a few of these reasons!

They’ve Been in Style for Decades

The romper actually first came onto the scene in the early 1900s as a one-piece outfit for children to stay clean while playing. In the 1920s, though, they transitioned into mainstream use for young women because of how versatile and cute they were.

From there, they proved to be a unique piece that could be styled differently, depending on what the decade’s unique style dictated, with different top styles, lengths, fabrics, and colors. In the ’40s, most rompers featured a blousy button-down top and looser-fitting, mid-thigh-length shorts. In the ’70s, many rompers were actually made out of casual, comfy terry cloth or refined, classy silk.

The rompers of today range in all sorts of trends and materials. Let’s go over a few of them.

They Have a Bunch of Different Style Options

How could a piece so versatile possibly go out of style, when it can mean so many different things?

Another huge reason that the romper has returned to the mainstream fashion scene is how many styles it can come in. The rompers of yesteryear that only came in certain styles are a thing of the past; there now exists a romper for every unique style, no matter what your taste or budget is.

If you want a cute, halter top, flowy shorts look, there is a romper for you. If you’re more into a tight-fitting, classy lace piece, there is also a romper for you, too. The sheer options a romper can offer you is one of the main reasons it’s making a good comeback.

They Have Dressier and More Casual Options

Along with the wide variety a romper can offer, it can also offer a style for any and every occasion.

For a casual picnic brunch, throw on a casual romper made out of jersey or linen in a light, casual color. Pair that with a pair of your favorite sneakers and a braid, and you’ve got a comfy but put-together look that you can easily move around in and feel confident in.

If your plans take you to a fancier event, like a date night out (or in, during these times) or an indie film premier, you can wear a romper made of a more refined material like a long-sleeve satin number, or even leather for an edgier look. You can match this up with some booties or heels, a nice necklace, and earrings, for an outfit that you can feel outstanding in on any occasion.

You can even wear a jumper to work (depending on the dress code). Just class it up with some tights and a blazer, sensible shoes, and you’re good to go.

Comfort and Ease

Though dresses are cute, classy, and we love them, they can be a bit uncomfortable for some of us. There are some considerations you have to take into account when wearing a dress; if it’s too long, you have to be careful how you walk and if it’s too short, you have to be careful how you sit.

Rompers can take all of these pressures out of the equation, meaning you can move about with ease and confidence, no matter where the day takes you. And nowadays, as we challenge the fashion norms set before us in years past, this makes rompers more relevant than ever.
