Whoopi Gets Absolution from ADL’s Greenblatt for Holocaust Claims

Proving there’s a double standard when it comes to who politically gets to have their career survive and life’s work preserved after making controversial comments, on Tuesday’s edition of ABC’s The View, co-host Whoopi Goldberg (a stage name) got direct absolution from Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt after she falsely claimed: “the Holocaust isn’t about race” (for which NewsBusters was first to report).

Whoopi began the show by suggesting she “misspoke” and while she tweeted out it last night, she wanted “you to hear it from me directly.”

“I said something that I feel a responsibility for not leaving unexamined because my words upset so many people which was never my intention,” she said. “And I understand why now, and for that I am deeply, deeply grateful because the information I got was really helpful and helped me understand some different things.”

Her birth was in 1955, 10 year after the end WWII. Does she really think we’ll believe that she never learned about how Nazis thought of Jews?

But that was what they were going with, so Greenblatt gave her a personal lesson about Nazis ideology and how they thought they were the “master race”:

Whoopi, it’s obvious that the Holocaust was about racism. This is how the Nazis saw the Holocaust. They targeted the Jewish people on all continents and in every country with deliberate cruelty.

And literally the first page of Maus, the book you were talking about yesterday, Whoopi, it opens with a quote from Hitler, and literally it says, “The Jews undoubtedly are a race, but they are not human.” You see, Hitler’s ideology, the Third Reich, was predicated on the idea that the Arians, the Germans were a quote, “master race” and the Jews were a subhuman race. This was racistized anti-Semitism.

Greenblatt did note that the history of hate against Jews doesn’t comport well with “the way we think about race in 21st century America, where primarily it’s about people of color.”

Adding: “But throughout the Jewish people’s history, they have been marginalized, they have been persecuted. They have been slaughtered in large part because many people felt they were not just a different religion, but indeed a different race.”

Greenblatt did not address recent ADL revelations that their definition of racism had been changed to include only black people being racist. “The marginalization and/or oppression of people of color based on a socially constructed racial hierarchy that privileges white people,” they wrote.

Joy Behar, the cohost, tried to pick out Ron DeSantis, Republican Florida Governor, and say he was not doing enough to condemn Anti-Semitism.

Jonathan, did you know that this past weekend, neo-Nazis organized a rally against Jews in Florida? The sight was very deplorable. It was deplorable to watch. DeSantis should take a stand on this particular issue.

Greenblatt tried the lure, but ultimately said that both the right and the left had to speak out against anti-Semitism whenever they encountered it. “We need conservatives to call it out when it happens on the right, and we need progressives to call it out when it happens on the left. If you demonize Jewish people or you demonize the Jewish state, that is flat-out wrong,” he declared.

WHOOPI Goldberg: Yesterday, we had a miscommunication. I posted about it on Twitter last night. But I want to tell you directly. Because I spoke something I regret, I have to take responsibility. This is why I now understand and am grateful for all the helpful information that helped me learn about different topics.

While discussing the unanimous vote of a Tennessee school board to take down a graphic book about the Holocaust, I stated that the holocaust was not about race but about man’s invulnerability to harm. It was about race, because Hitler and Nazis considered Jews an inferior race.

Words matter, and mine are no exception. Sorry for my mistakes and I have corrected them. Also, I am with Jewish people. They know that I do.

We asked Jonathan Greenblatt (CEO of Anti-Defamation League) about all this. He is also the author of You Could See It Happen HereTo continue this important conversation, please contact

Jonathan, we are grateful that you were here. It’s clear that a lot people are very offended by my comments yesterday. I am sorry for the mistakes they made. So, let me clarify. Could you please explain the reason why holocaust revolved around race?

JONATHAN GREENBLATT (Whoopi): It’s clear that the Holocaust was all about race. The Nazis understood it that way when they executed systematic genocide of Jews on continents and in other countries.

The first page is literally what you see. Maus, the book you were talking about yesterday, Whoopi, it opens with a quote from Hitler, and literally it says, “The Jews undoubtedly are a race, but they are not human.” You see, Hitler’s ideology, the Third Reich, was predicated on the idea that the Arians, the Germans were a quote, “master race” and the Jews were a subhuman race. This was racistized anti-Semitism.

GOLDBERG: Okay.

GREENBLATT – This might feel or fit differently to the 21 way of thinking about race.It is possible toCentury America is primarily about people of colour. They were marginalized throughout Jewish history and have often been persecuted. Many people believed they were not only a different religion but a different race and therefore, their deaths have been a result.

Whoopi’s platform is crucial in helping to spread awareness that anti-Semitism still poses a grave threat.

GOLDBERG: Yes.

JOY BEHAR The sight was very deplorable. It was deplorable to watch. DeSantis should take a stand on this particular issue.

GREENBLATT, Well, I think that we need elected representatives — Joy, thank you so much for pointing it out. There was again a Nazi rally held in Florida. A little more than a year ago we saw people in sweatshirts wearing t-shirts saying things such as “champ Auschwitz” or “6mwe”, 6 million was not enough, and marching through our Capitol. You know, from Capitol Hill to way back to Charlottesville when they chanted “Jews will not replace us.” We need elected officials to show moral leadership and to call out hate when it happens with clarity and conviction.

(…)

Conservatives need to speak out when this happens to the right and progressives need to voice their disapproval when it occurs to the left. It is utterly wrong to demonize Jewish people and the Jewish state.
