The United States is home to 735 billionaires, and they inhabit 42 of the 50 states. The states that have no billionaires are Alabama, Alaska, Delaware, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Vermont, and West Virginia.
Other states have over a hundred billionaires each, like California or New York for example. Some states don’t have a lot, like Missouri only has 7 billionaires, such as the individual mentioned in this article here.
In this article, we’re going to be going over the top 6 states when it comes to the amount of billionaires residing in them.
1 – California
Not a huge surprise, California has the highest number of billionaires with a staggering 186. If California were its own country, it would rank third in the number of billionaires, behind China and The United States, and just ahead of India at 169.
A question not everyone may be able to immediately answer is who the richest billionaire in California is. There are many very well known billionaires that live in the U.S., such as Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, but none of those names live in California.
The richest individual currently living in California is Larry Page, the former CEO and co-founder of Google, and its parent company – Alphabet. His net worth is estimated to be roughly $111 billion, making him the 8th richest in the world.
2 – New York
Another name that shouldn’t shock many, New York comes in second with 135 billionaires. New York City being the financial capital of the world definitely contributes the vast majority of billionaires to the 135 New York has, as it is the largest center for public equity and debt capital markets in the world.
The richest individual from New York is Michael Bloomberg, with a networth of $96 billion. He made his fortune building his media company Bloomberg L.P.
3 – Florida
The first state on this list to not have a triple digit amount of billionaires is Florida, with 78 billionaires. Unlike California and New York, the sunshine state doesn’t have any well known billionaires. Ken Griffin is the richest in Florida, with a net worth of $37.5 billion. He is the 38th richest in the world, and made his fortune through hedge funds.
4 – Texas
Just behind Florida is Texas with 73 billionaires. With numerous large cities such as Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, along with companies such as Tesla moving to Texas, it’s no surprise that the big state has so many billionaires.
The richest person in Texas is also the richest in the world, being none other than the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter – now X. His net worth is $254 billion, much of which can be attributed to his 21% share in Tesla as well as his company SpaceX which is worth an estimated $150 billion. Additionally, Musk owns X which he bought outright for $44 billion in April of 2022, although many estimates say the company is now worth significantly less now.
5 – Illinois
With significantly less billionaires than Texas, Illinois is 5th on this list when it comes to which states have the most billionaires. The prairie state is home to 23 billionaires, many of whom can be found in and around Chicago.
The richest person living in the state of Illinois is Lukas Walton, the heir to the Walmart throne. He has a networth of $23 billion, and is the 7th richest millennial according to this article from visual capitalist. The richest millennial is Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, also known as Meta.
6 – Massachusetts
At 22 billionaires, Massachusetts has the 6th highest number of billionaires in The United States. With the state being a leader in biotechnology and healthcare, it shouldn’t be that big of a surprise to see them rank so high up on the list. With the addition of Boston contributing to some incredible real estate, it also makes sense that so many billionaires would want to call Massachusetts home.
The richest individual residing in Massachusetts is Abigail Johnson, with a networth of $25.5 billion. She began working at her grandfather’s financial giant, Fidelity, in the early 1980s while she was still in college, and would become CEO in 2014. She is the 6th richest woman in the world, and 56th richest in the world overall.
