“What Is a Woman” has dropped like a bomb into the center of the political sphere, drawing a wide variety of reactions. In it, Matt Walsh interviews a range of subjects on transgender ideology, from supposed “experts” on gender to a trans-man who emotionally exposes the dangers of targeting children with so-called “gender theory” (click here and here for more coverage).
But while there’s been no shortage of public praise and outrage, those you’d expect the most to give their opinions are running for the hills. Walsh emails show that movie critics refuse to review the film.
A few months ago, hundreds of critics were happy to not only watch but cheer Fresh, a movie about cannibal who hacks up & sells women’s body parts. Human Centipede (a movie that forced feeds people human feces) was liked by half of the critics. However, What Is A Woman was way too offensive. https://t.co/KFA2MaPhvN pic.twitter.com/WCk1Nd0Uio

To check if my impressions of the movie’s dynamic had changed, I visited Rotten Tomatoes shortly before writing this article. Did critics begin to write reviews of the movie within days of its release? It is not, the simple answer. At the moment, only one review has been done, and it is from a Hollywood-leaning site. Walsh’s emails show that critics are angry at Walsh for asking them to review the film.
These responses are an example of intellectual cowardice by people too afraid to challenge their rational beliefs. For those working in Hollywood, fear of being labeled a bigot is more important than anything. Because of that, they won’t even entertain the idea that a man can’t, in fact, become a woman.
Megan Basham, a Megan Basham spokesman, says that critics are not afraid to review any kind of offensive or insane content. A movie asking a straightforward, difficult question is too much for transgender activists.
And to be clear, “What Is a Woman” is not actually a rabid, partisan takedown of leftwing gender ideology. Walsh doesn’t bring in a group of anti-transgender voices just to shout at the choir. Rather, the movie focuses on allowing proponents of transgenderism to speak “their truth,” no matter how absurd. It is that absurdity that ultimately provides the movie’s most convincing evidence against gender theory.
But, yet again, the left has declared that something is off limits based upon no empirical evidence. Even supposedly independent, open-minded critics have left the room, refusing their jobs lest they are called transphobic. I find none of these things to be positive for our society. And it’s crazy that critics boycott movies with audience scores of 97 per cent.
