It is impossible to go somewhere without being influenced by inflation. Inflation, shortages and an aging labor force make it difficult for families to buy the necessities. This is a vicious cycle that has left many people in poverty.
It is clear that none of these factors are favorable for Democrats (the party currently in power).
Joe Biden’s job approval on the economy is around 35-36 percent, according to the RealClearPolitics polling average. If not, the economy is one of many issues. TheInflation is the most important issue that voters care about at this time. The strategy of at most one Democrat is therefore a bit strange.
The campaign website of Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto does not mention the word “inflation.” Voters will not find it on her Twitter feed, or in any of her ads as she faces a tough re-election battle for her U.S. Senate seat in Nevada, a contest that could determine which party controls Congress.
Cortez Masto, an elected official, is betting that her ability to skirt the topic and play up her role in providing COVID relief for Nevadans will enable her to survive an unforgiving political climate.
Analysts believe her strategy, which includes attacking the likely Republican opponent for his support of curbing abortion rights in an attempt to save her party’s life at a time where U.S. President Joe Biden (a Democrat) has low approval ratings, and inflation has reached a forty-year high, may be her best chance at survival.
It is hard to imagine putting all your hope on the right to abortion, but the topic barely registers in public. Sure, the politicians and the pundits are discussing it quite a bit, but if you actually look into the homes of Americans, everyone’s concern is how much it costs to buy things like groceries, gas, and paying for basic needs. Except for the people it is already a top concern for, abortion seems not to be motivating anyone.
The Biden Administration seems to understand it too, even going as far to write an opinion piece for the Wall Street JournalHe outlined how his administration would tackle the problem of inflation. However, the plan will not work.
Biden also wants Congress to help by “passing clean energy tax credits and investments that I have proposed.”
It is likely that many people who struggle to get baby formula and fill up their gas tanks are confused by this decision. And Joe, did you think the recent canceling of one of the most high-profile oil and gas leases in the country would really help?
Biden goes on to give a list of goals to fix supply chains, increase infrastructure, decrease foreign ocean freight fees and make housing more accessible by building more than 1 million additional units.
Whoa, that’s a lot of goals. Unfortunately, he doesn’t provide much in the way of specifics on how he intends to accomplish all of this.
However, they did publish an op-ed so that people knew he wanted to act. Clearly, though, that doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence in Democrats like Catherine Cortez Masto, who will continue to just ignore the issue of inflation.
This is the reason November looks so great for Republicans. It’s not that the Republicans have or even need to have a plan ahead of taking back the House and the Senate. It’s just that they shouldn’t be seen to actively contribute to it. And you can absolutely have the argument over whether or not it’s fair to blame the Democrats (though it seems pretty clear that Biden’s administration played a major role by being passive about the actual needs of the country), but you can’t deny that when you say “I’m in charge now” and then things turn to ash under your watch, you have opened yourself up for that blame.
Ignoring the issue of inflation, though, isn’t a winning strategy. At best, it’s a weak attempt at a mitigation strategy. However, it offers us an interesting experiment. Will Democrats be able to win solely on social issues?
Hypothesis: No.
