We All Should Declare Ourselves Honorary Canadians and Thank Them – Opinion

Freedom is a fragile thing and it’s never more than one generation away from extinction. Freedom isn’t ours through inheritance. It must be fought and protected by every generation. Because it can only be given once to any one person. The only people in the history of the world who had ever experienced freedom but then lost it are those who never saw it again.

Ronald Reagan–Jan 5, 1967

It is a country I deeply love. United States of America is one of most extraordinary countries on the planet.

My heart believes that the Lord led this nation to its foundation. This belief goes back to April 27, 1607 when English colonists planted the Cape Henry cross in Virginia. The covenant that this country’s forefathers made with the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is one of the reasons that this nation has flourished in such a short amount of time compared to all other countries in world history.

However, I know from personal experience that even those created in God’s image are often far short of His glory. This universal truth is true in every country. It is also why I keep a more secular belief in my brain that provides a wonderful perspective on a country as diverse and large as the United States.

Patriotism means supporting your country whenever it is needed, as well your government when you feel it should.Mark Twain.

Yesterday in Ottawa,Canada, and truly throughout the whole of the “Great White North,” a melting pot of human beings from all different backgrounds came together to bring Twain’s famous quote above to life in a way that I have not seen in quite some time. Although the Truckers Rally for Freedom 2022 was originally a rally for truckers, it is now a gathering of people who have worked 24/7, 365 days per year to ensure that we can purchase food and other supplies at any time. But it appears that it has become something more.

Canada is a model for how the 21st century can be protested against overbearing governments. They have written an entirely new book, not only a new chapter on protesting to preserve our freedoms, but also how to do so the Canadian way.

As an American who relishes my country’s past of being a little bit too itchy for a fight at the drop of a hat, I have to admit this surprises me in multiple ways. Everyday Canadians proved yesterday that they can keep their heads up and not look for a fight. They wore wool hats securely and snuggly in the cold while demanding to be heard from their government.

Unfortunately, the mandates went too far. This is why one of the most ancient sayings in the world, which has its intrinsic truth, gives life to the old saying: “Give an inch and they” (in this instance, government), will take a mile.

Truckers are the lifeblood of any country and the federal government of Canada had zero issues with “essential” border crossings in all of 2020 and 2021 with no vaccine mandate. They are not scientific mandates, they are simply the will of overpaid staff who think their power is superior. Overbearing mandates now include businesses being shut down and ordered to reopen by Ottawa at an unspecified date. They also extend to students wearing masks to gym class.

The safety and wellbeing of citizens is not at stake. This policy was crafted by bored bureaucrats using all the weight and enforcement powers of Canada’s Federal Government. They can and have been making average Canadians’ lives miserable based on a hunch and the result was Saturday, January 29th in Ottawa.

Canada is done.

Many Americans are going to recite the above quote from Ronald Reagan, then-Governor. It is a reminder that freedom is worth protecting. We read the words but don’t always grasp the true meaning because we have become a bit fat and lazy while feasting on the freedom buffet we were born into but might not have really earned.

Canada taught us yesterday how to earn it. It was incredible to witness. As an American, this is not the position I thought I would  ever find myself in, praising another country on how to do the “freedom thing.” Yet here I am, and I am incredibly grateful to our Canadian cousins for the lesson brought to us from them.

If you value your freedom and believe that it is just one generation away from being taken away from you, as Reagan so eloquently warned, then today you stand with Canada and her patriots who love thier country but do not support its government’s policies.

This makes us all Canadians.

Aujourd’hui ça fait de nous tous des Canadians.
