The Washington Examiner reports that Peter Arredondo is the Uvalde Consolidated Independent Schools District Police Chief. He has come under scrutiny because he is alleged to have coordinated the response at Robb Elementary School.
Arrendondo, who was previously elected by Uvalde voters in Texas prior to the shooting incident, was also sworn into office.
As RedState reported earlier, the Texas Department of Public Safety said earlier Tuesday that Arrendondo, in particular, and the city’s police officials were no longer cooperating with state investigators. The gunman who shot and killed 19 students as well as two teachers in the school’s classrooms, Arredondo decided to wait for assistance and not face him. According to DPS Arredondo thought the shooter had detained himself in the school. This was not considered an active shooter situation according to NBC News.
“From the benefit of hindsight where I’m sitting now, of course, it was not the right decision. It was wrong. Period. There was no excuse for that,” Texas DPS Director Steven McCraw said at a news conference, according to NBC News.
“There were plenty of officers to do what needed to be done, with one exception, is that the incident commander inside believed he needed more equipment and more officers to do a tactical breach at that time,” McCraw added.
The New York Post reports that state officials also wanted to know if the chief kept his radio in the car during the incident, according to New York Post.
