Pete Arredondo (Uvalde Consolidated Independent school District Police) has quit the Uvalde City Council following a month of service.
Arredondo was the focus of police investigation into the Robb Elementary School shooting of May 24, in which 19 children and three teachers were killed.
To Uvalde Leader News, he said:
“After much consideration, I regret to inform those who voted for me that I have decided to step down as a member of the city council for District 3. It is up to the mayor, the council of the city, and staff of the city to keep moving ahead without any distractions. I feel this is the best decision for Uvalde,” Arredondo said.
“As we continue to grieve over the tragedy that occurred on May 24th, we pray for the families involved and our community. Uvalde is known for its rich tradition of supporting and loving our neighbors. We must do this again. In speaking with other communities that have had similar tragedies, the guidance has been the same… continue to support the families, continue to support our community, and definitely, to keep our faith.
“As I think about my life, from growing up as a child and to adulthood, Uvalde has held an attraction that is very unique. The community is the core of all that attraction. Uvalde will be strong together. Uvalde strong, Uvalde home.”
Leader-News stated that although the chief of police insisted that he did not call the shots on that particular day, Steven McCraw (director of Texas Department of Public Safety) pointed out that McCraw was responsible for the failure along with other local officials.
KENS claims that he was elected before the May 7th shooting.
One of the main concerns about Arredondo’s response was how long it took for local authorities to respond, as the shooter was eventually stopped by a Border Patrol Tactical Team, the Associated Press reported.
