USA Today Has NOTHING on Threat to Kavanaugh Today, Other Papers Yawn

Although the network stories all focused on the attempt to shoot Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh it was not everyone’s Top Story. The story was at the very least interesting. Curtis Houck, NewsBusters’ Managing Editor, looked through all the news media on Thursday and discovered that USA Today (which bills itself every day on its front page as “The Nation’s News”) had not covered the Kavanaugh threat.

Is that possible? The Washington Post It tweeted its first story on Wednesday at 10.22 AM. It is absurd that “McPaper”, despite having an extremely early deadline, has a story out by this time. On January 6, they ran a headline on the front page, and on January 6, they ran the whole page 3A. Betsy DeVos, former Trump education secretary, was the top Opinion section. She stated that the riot “was not defensible” and was “not defendable in any way.” The Kavanaugh story is not being ignored.

The New York Times This was too long to put on the first page.

Federal affidavits state that an armed man was charged with attempted murder after he traveled to Maryland to try and kill a judge. PAGE A20

The front page instead features seven colour photographs from January 6, and the headline, “INSIDE A ATTACK ON THE DEMOCRACY.” The inside contains a lengthy report that covers four pages of January 6.

This page is all about the South Korean ferry disaster that resulted in 250 deaths of high school students in 2014. Page A6 contains a long article about the “rising intimidation” of Indigenous people in Amazonia.

The Kavanaugh article, however, was placed under the fold on A20, where more space was given to the “Crime, Football, NRA in New York Governor Debate” section. The fifth paragraph of their Kavanaugh story did not get to the motives (abortion, control gun violence) for the assassin.

The first editorial page had the majority of its content on 1/6. It was headlined “Don’t Expect Must-Watch TV” during the prime-time hearings. The column by David Brooks was headlined, “The Jan.6 Committee Has Already Broken It.”

The Wall Street Journal Put a Kavanaugh photo below the fold of Page One and the headline, “Kavanaugh Threatened.” Jan Wolfe’s article page 3 briefly discussed what Kavanaugh “allegedly told” authorities regarding his motive…in the 7th paragraph of an 112-paragraph piece.

The liberal papers include The Washington PostKavanaugh’s story was placed at the top of the frontpage in the left column. This continued to the bottom on page A4.

The Washington Times Its top story was complete with motive.Kavanaugh to be murdered at home by man:Confessions of anger about abortion, loaded on a truck. A story about the “Pro-life sites of pregnancy attacked by Americans awaiting court ruling” was next to this story.

PS: Ted Cruz spokesman Steve Guest tweetedYou can find the Chicago TribuneKavanaugh was not mentioned on the front page, nor were they in the Los Angeles Times A tiny blurb was included on page 1, similar to the New York Times.
