Update on Mask ‘Karen’ Who Hit Elderly Man in Face on Delta Flight Makes Her Look Even Worse – Opinion

We wrote about the chaos that occurred on Delta’s flight from Tampa to Atlanta, Dec. 23, 2012.

The elderly man did not wear a mask during the flight, which angered a woman. He claimed he was having dinner at that time. She started screaming at him to put his mask on, a verbal back and forth ensued, with him telling her to “Sit down, Karen” and calling her a bad name. She allegedly hit him in his face. After that, she scratched him and then spat on him. As she yelled at the man for his mask to be put up, the mask fell around her chin.

More information is now available about the case. Reports indicate that the victim was aged 80 and other victims were also injured, although the injuries of the crew members are not clear. Multiple crew members tried to help the woman get away from him. The clip ends with a person, possibly a passenger, saying that she had poured hot water over his leg.

Patricia Cornwall was the name of the victim and she was taken into FBI custody after landing in Atlanta.

Delta has issued a statement about the incident.

“Flight 2790 from Tampa to Atlanta was met by law enforcement after an unruly customer disturbance during flight. Situations like these are rare for the vast majority of our customers and Delta has zero tolerance for unruly behavior at our airports and aboard our aircraft.”

There was more to her story than she thought before she pursued him over the mask. According to court records she attempted to get back to her seat by navigating but was blocked from her flight attendants. The flight attendants then asked her to take a vacant seat so they can finish the job and pass her. According to the report she said, “What am I Rosa Parks?” The elderly man who was sitting nearby took offense to her comment and said to her that she “isn’t black….this isn’t Alabama and this isn’t a bus.” It was after that that she went off on him about his mask. It’s hard to imagine anyone making that kind of comparison when they were asked to take a seat in order to assist the attendants. That’s completely unhinged.

According to the records, they considered the assault on the elderly man a violation Title 18 United States Code Section 113(a(4)), as well as an offense within the special maritime or territorial jurisdiction of the United States. It was also on board a flight-plane.
