According to the BBC, this port is now a key logistics hub for Russian forces. Video footage from the scene showed flames and smoke rising from the berthing zone. According to Kyiv, the Russian Navy landing ship Orsk was destroyed in the attack. Berdyansk was taken west of Mariupol after Russia invaded Ukraine.

As noted by the BBC, the Russian army hailed the arrival of the Orsk in Berdyansk last week as an “epic event” as it was the first Russian warship to dock there. Moscow has claimed that it uses the port for equipment transport. Russian state television filmed drone footage that showed an armored personnel car being taken from the Orsk to the port.

Ukrainian officials did not immediately disclose how the attack was carried out, although Ukraine’s new Neptune anti-ship missiles have a range of roughly 200 miles but have not been used in the war so far. In a Facebook post, the Ukrainian navy claimed:

Russian officials didn’t immediately confirm the attack.
Clearly, Putin’s envisioned short incursion into Ukraine, during which he reportedly believed Russian troops would be met by Ukrainians as liberators, continues to go from bad to worse — on multiple levels.
Not only have Ukrainian forces fought more fiercely and effectively than even the U.S. believed they would; Putin’s invasion has only served to unify NATO far more than member countries have unified themselves in decades. As my colleague Streiff reported on Wednesday, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced increases in assistance to Ukraine, four news NATO multinational battlegroups on NATO’s Eastern Flank — doubling the total number to eight —and the possibility of permanent basing.
The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who continues his nightly video releases, also made a Wednesday release. But for the first time, he spoke English — a sign it was meant for a worldwide audience. In part, he said:
War of Russia does not refer to the conflict against Ukraine. It has a wider meaning. Russia launched the war against freedom. This is not the end of Russia’s involvement in the Ukrainian country. Russia wants to end freedom for all Europeans; all of humanity. This demonstrates that the only thing that matters is a crude, cruel force. It attempts to prove that humans are not as important as all the other things that make us human. That’s the reason we all must stop Russia. All nations must end the conflict.
