For men in America’s educational past, a period was an hour-long measurement. There’s been a notable change.
Students at the University of California Los Angeles are offered medical supplies for free.
Daily Bruin school paper reports:
On October 1, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation requiring colleges and public schools to offer free menstrual products starting in the 2022-2023 school years. UCLA sent a March 17 email to campus stating that it has provided free access to campus restrooms with menstrual supplies in an effort increase basic necessities.
UCLA’s going all-out:
As the first institution in the University of California system to provide free menstrual products, UCLA is stocking them in more than 50% of restrooms — above the amount recommended by the bill.
Access will not only be available to women, but the college of public land-grant researchers is being kind toward gentlemen as well.
It university is providing these products in men’s, women’s and gender-neutral restrooms, the email stated.
So if you’re a man and it’s first period, you’ll be relieved to know the restroom stall’s ready for your maiden voyage on the Red Sea.
As relayed by the Bruin, the school’s been serving up free sanitary supplies since 2017.
The [Student Wellness Commission’s BruiNecessities]Camille Sumilang (co-director of BruiNecessities and a student in psychobiology) was the first to establish menstrual product boxes within Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center. Kerckhoff Hall followed.
The flow of money has become more intense since then.
Tayloneei Jock, Student Wellness Commissioner for the Undergraduate Students Association Council stated that SWC grants have been provided annually to Ashe Center with $10,000 to cover the cost of menstrual products. The committee’s feedback on the program’s benefits prompted the university to begin providing their own products, said Kelly Schmader, assistant vice chancellor for Facilities Management, in an emailed statement.
Tayloneei, a biology major, noted the importance and value of inclusion:
It was important to ensure the university would prioritize inclusiveness and supply all bathrooms, including men’s, said Jackson, a fourth-year human biology and society student.
The Bruin reports that “menstruation is not a gendered issue.” Therefore, “the need to provide quality products is essential for all, Jackson said.”
Here’s a bit of sex ed:
Light is a fourth year student in microbiology and immunology. She said that even people who don’t identify themselves as women can still menstruate.
Google is a partner, as you might be aware. If one searches “Can men menstruate,” the following is a top result courtesy of Transhub.org:
Periods are not something that is exclusively for women. All genders have periods, from non-binary to agender, as well as many men. Menstruation doesn’t change anything about your gender, it’s just a thing that some bodies do.
We’ve certainly come a long way. Take a look at this clip for 2019. Bill Maher: RealTime:
This once-novel idea is now a commonplace:

Back to UCLA, as it gifts students with sanitary solutions, it’s plugging environmentalism with planned products for those whose cups runneth over:
The committee’s next step is to provide sustainable and reusable menstrual products – such as menstrual cups, reusable pads and period underwear – in line with the UCLA Sustainability Committee’s goals, Light said. Schmader stated that while UCLA studies the price and availability of sustainable products, students can currently get menstrual cups from the Community Programs Office.
There were once men and woman. Now, we’re told the two no longer exist. We’re simultaneously informed that anyone can be either.
Of course, this evolution is a matter of language. However, something personal is happening in American restrooms: In the midst of national division and malodorous bodily odors, both biological sexes come together to make sexy.
We are on the verge of progress: Gender now replaces sex. Our binary system is giving way to a sexual multiverse. And in guys’ bathroom stalls, previously unused space is being claimed in the name of MENstruation.
