Twitter declared Tuesday it was expanding its privacy policy and will now allow individuals to post media without their consent.
“There are growing concerns about the misuse of media and information that is not available elsewhere online as a tool to harass, intimidate, and reveal the identities of individuals,” the announcement read. “Sharing personal media, such as images or videos, can potentially violate a person’s privacy, and may lead to emotional or physical harm.”
Twitter saidMinorities will be protected by the extension of this policy. “The misuse of private media can affect everyone, but can have a disproportionate effect on women, activists, dissidents, and members of minority communities. If we get a tweet containing unauthorized media from a third party, we’ll take the appropriate steps. range of enforcement options.”
This article is about exception to this policy will be “media featuring public figures or individuals when media and accompanying Tweet text are shared in the public interest or add value to public discourse.” No context was provided as to how the platform will determine what media is “in the public interest.”
Although the policy was intended to prevent private people from being doxxed with online information not publically available elsewhere, there have been concerns expressed by some users about the implementation of the policy.
“The problem isn’t that Twitter is going to decide this,” Twitter user @neontaster, a popular account among users with right-of-center beliefs, tweeted. “The problem is that random blue checkmarks are going to decide this, raise a stink, and then Twitter will delete whatever it is they’re angry about.”
This news is one day after Jack Dorsey, former CEO of Twitter, resigned. It announced that Parag Agrawal (ex-CTO) would assume the position.
Agrawal has faced controversy in the past and once said that Twitter should not be “bound” by the First Amendment.
“Our role is not to be bound by the First Amendment, but our role is to serve a healthy public conversation”, Agrawal said when asked how the platform can censor “misinformation” and still promote free speech. Agrawal added that Twitter’s role is to “focus less on thinking about free speech, but thinking about how the times have changed.”
Conservatives have expressed concerns about Agrawal’s new position.
Human Events Senior Editor Jack Posobiec said that “Jack Dorsey leaving Twitter is bad, bad, bad for free speech,” adding that “The wokes will be unleashed now.”
