Trump-Endorsed Katie Britt Beats Back Mo Brooks for Republican Senate Nod – Opinion

In case you didn’t know (between the horrid “bi-partisan” gun bill the Senate is attempting to pass and the distressing news out of Uvalde), there are several primaries and runoff elections happening tonight.

RedState is closely following the Alabama Senate race. The former President Donald J. Trump endorsed the race, but then withdrew his endorsement from U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks and instead supported Katie Britt, an ex-Chief of Staff to Senator Richard Shelby who is retiring.

It was a contest between the real MAGA candidate or the Republican establishment candidate that became the runoff.

Britt won Tuesday night.

Alabama’s voters can choose which Britt belongs to.

Katie Britt, a former leader of the Business Council of Alabama, has defeated Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., in the Alabama GOP Senate primary runoff election as she aims to become the Yellowhammer State’s first elected female senator later this year.

Britt and Brooks were defeated by less than half of those who voted in the primary election on May 24, 2015. Each candidate was running to succeed retiring Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), who served over 35 years in Congress but voted for Britt.

Britt confirmed that Trump endorsed her in an interview with Fox Digital.

Britt said she was “excited and grateful” to have Trump’s support as “people are ready for new blood.”

“Alabamians loved the president,” she said at the time. “They miss the America First agenda and they are ready for our country to get back on track.”

Despite losing Trump’s endorsement, Brooks did his level best to maintain his MAGA creds and paint Britt as a bought-and-paid-for establishment candidate who would be a rubber stamp for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. This was supported by the whiffs of money coming from Texas and New York, along with some PAC transactions that were suspicious.

Brooks, who recovered from his earlier struggles on the campaign trail and forced Britt into a runoff, was hoping to engineer a “David versus Goliath” comeback of his own.

Despite losing Trump’s endorsement and seeing his pleas for the former president to “#ReEndorseMO” fall on deaf ears, Brooks continues to run as the true pro-Trump candidate in the race. Britt, the Republican congressman accused of being a sellout to the establishment who will submit to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R–KY). Trump tried to provoke rebellion against McConnell nearly one year. Brooks is not helped.

But with Trump’s endorsement, Britt saw a surge in the polls that helped her make it to a runoff on Tuesday. Alabama polls close at 7:00 PM Eastern. Britt won 2 hours after the polls closed in Alabama. 79 percent of the vote.

Brooks made a Twitter concession:

Each person involved in this campaign is an American patriot, which I want to thank. This isn’t the outcome we wanted, but I am proud to have fought for our country. America and all of you are well worth the sacrifice. God bless.

-Mo

Britt will be challenging Will Boyd, former Chair of the Democrat Party on November 8. Britt should win easily, with Alabama’s bright red and the Democrat Party in collapse.

RedState will be watching the race closely.
