Trump-Endorsed Candidate Dan Cox Defeats Hogan Pick in Maryland GOP Gubernatorial Primary – Opinion

The Associated Press is reporting that there’s a winner in the Republican gubernatorial primary, to fill the seat of GOP Governor Larry Hogan, who is term-limited.

AP:

Dan Cox is a radical-right Maryland legislator who was backed by President Donald Trump. He won Tuesday’s Republican primary to become Maryland Governor. Larry Hogan.

Cox will be facing the Democratic Primary winner in November’s general election. Top Democratic contenders include Tom Perez (ex-U.S. Labor Secretary) and Democratic Party Chair, Wes Moore, bestselling author and Peter Franchot, state Comptroller.

The Hill

Cox cited his experiences as a small-businessman, state delegate and constitutional lawyer. The Trump endorsee also previously made a bid for a congressional seat in the state’s 8th Congressional District, later losing to then-state Sen. Jamie Raskin (D).

[Kelly] Schulz, meanwhile. Her experience as a Maryland House of Delegates member and former commerce secretary, labor secretary under Hogan was praised.

The former Hogan administration official’s campaign platform included backing law enforcement, supporting parents involvement in education curriculum and fighting efforts to raise taxes. Cox’s platform mirrored some of Schulz’s, but they also included his anti-abortion stance, supporting Second Amendment rights and fighting gerrymandering, among others.

RedState previously wrote on Tuesday that the race was a matchup between the endorsers. However, Cox did have his own fights with Governor Cox as a state delagate.

Former President Donald Trump criticized Maryland Governor Larry Hogan on the eve of Tuesday’s Maryland GOP primary, calling him a RINO because he implemented statewide lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cox has previously butted heads with Hogan during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically about the state’s pandemic stay-at-home order, as he filed a lawsuit and filed a resolution of impeachment. The governor was accused of violating resident rights.

The former president released a statement about the race — and Hogan — Monday night, which read: “Maryland, tomorrow is a big day. Get out and vote for Dan Cox for Governor … Get rid of Shutdown RINO Larry Hogan who is trying to get another RINO into office, Kelly Schulz.”
