Shanghai is a wonderful city. Shanghai is a fascinating city. It has always been an international hub. It’s known for being a financial hub and its food. When I was there, I recall fondly what great sheng jian bao (like a fried soup dumpling) they had at Yang’s Fried Dumpling. It’s one of the area’s great contributions to food.
Why am I talking about their great food?
This city, once a joy, has become a misery because of China’s government. In response to Omicron, they have instituted zero-COVID lockdowns. There are many people in desperate need of food, medical attention, and medicine. Riots are even breaking out — a huge thing that shows you just how desperate people are; rioters can face severe punishment in repressive China.
It is frightening to see the situation in Shanghai. Social media is abuzz with reports of people struggling to feed their families, of elderly who are unable to get medicine and videos showing small riots. Numerous households are dependent on poor govt food supplies. pic.twitter.com/bW1ixaTu7O

People aren’t getting the food that was supposed to be distributed by the government; supermarkets are shut down. Police responded when people stormed a community gate at one complex.

One Shanghai resident is so desperate, that he blasts the Communist government and tells them to come and get him — because he can’t take it anymore.

Children are sometimes separated from their parents when either they or the parents become sick. This is a common practice and causes anger.
In the images, a series of hospital cribs, each holding several young children, appeared to be parked in the hallway of the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center in the city’s Jinshan district. In a video, several children were seen crying.
While the images and videos could not be independently verified by health centers, they stated in a statement that they were authentic and didn’t deny that Covid-positive parents were being taken from their children.

#shanghai as authorities separate kids from children, this man keeps her daughter close to him, not respecting social distanciation (anyway they live together …) . Absurd volunteers in charge … pic.twitter.com/icBvdFheCv

Some elderly people succumbed at Donghai’s senior care center after some contracted COVID.
Shen Peiming is the one. At the age of 71, she died Sunday morning. She was one the Donghai Elderly Care Hospital in Shanghai. Although patients have passed away at the hospital, relatives don’t know much about what went down.@dakekang — https://t.co/FlwaH0tTls pic.twitter.com/EXtIDckG1F

They brought in temporary help who didn’t have medical training.
This may be the final straw. All the family members we talked to are now unable visit the dead because of the lockdown. Instead they remain at home. In an echo of Wuhan’s lockdown, they’re being asked to cremate their loved ones without seeing them.

Jared Nelson, a lawyer operating in China, is there and has a detailed thread about the lockdown and what they are going through; it’s worth a read, as he notes no one is allowed out.
Omicron, the mildest variant of Omicron, is what adds to the madness. We made it through, even with Joe Biden claiming it would be a “winter of severe illness and death.” Who knows how many people are dying because of the lockdown and the response, and not the virus? We will never get an honest count. This is far worse than Omicron could have imagined.
This is exactly what happens when your citizens are treated like slaves.
