As NewsBusters documented Thursday morningTheir Super Bowl was January 6th, as broadcasters (ABC/CBS/NBC) spent close to 90 minutes obsessing on the riots at the Capitol. It seemed like their political careers could be depended upon it. This obsession was carried on through half-time, to keep with the football nomenclature. It continued into their evening newscasts when CBS and NBC gave them over 80 percent.
NBC Nightly NewsGiven their MSNBC connections, was undoubtedly the most politically involved. Their total time dedicated to news delivery was 18 minutes and 33 second, but they only spent 15 minutes 27 seconds on January 6th and stories related thereto.
These time tallies do not include the following: opening teases; pre-commercial teases; teases of future network content/reports and commercials.
Of course, as he usually is, NBC anchor Lester Holt was grandiose when speaking about the day’s events. “Tonight we begin in the shadow of Washington, D.C., symbolizing democracy and, for the last year, showing how fragile democracy can be.” he declared at the top of the show. “Today, one year after the terror attack on the World Trade Center that shocked the entire world, the date January 6, evokes sadness and anger as well as denial or rationalization.”
Also, he conducted an interview with Nancy Pelosi (D.NY), giving her the opportunity to claim that a bomb was dropped upon Congress and to prepare her to give lectures to Republicans on what they once stood for.
Kristen Welker from the White House was even more outrageous than Vice President Kamala Harris, comparing it to Pearl Harbor’s deadlines.
WELKER – The Vice President made a comparison between January 6th and the famous attacks on America that claimed thousands of lives, such as Pearl Harbor or 9/11.
HARRIS – Certain dates have recurred throughout history. The dates of December 7, 1941, September 11, 2001, and January 6, 2021 are all echoes.
There are more CBS Evening NewsWith 16 minutes and 56 seconds of news time, and 13 minutes and 43 second dedicated to anniversary coverage, they were placed in second. It means that nearly 81% (80.8%) of their news airtime goes to something very few people in the D.C. New York bubble are interested in.
CBS anchor Norah O’Donnell ignored the 100-day siege of the federal courthouse Portland in the summer of 2020 that left many federal officers injured – some with permanent eye damage from laser pointers – and suggested “The insurrection was one of the worst days of injury for law enforcement since the September 11 attacks…”
Adding: “…but it was more than the Capitol that was attacked – democracy itself was under assault but, in the end, democracy prevailed.” The network also pushed the false, Democratic Party narrative that voting rights were in peril.
As with NBC, CBS’s other covered contented included the COVID pandemic and more winter weather hitting the Washington, D.C. area, because they’re forever obsessed with themselves.
Finally, we have ABC’s World News TonightA slightly smaller majority (56.6%) of their news content went to celebrations of the new church of government holiday. At 15 minutes and 58 seconds, their news coverage aired the least. Nine minutes and twelve seconds were allotted to January 6.
“It has been one year since the attack on the Capitol. And today, President Biden addressing the American people and condemning former President Trump,” lauded ABC anchor David Muir.
