I’m a former liberal. My journey to the right side of the political spectrum didn’t take place until my thirties. My family and many of my friends remain on the left, though mostly residing in what I’d characterize as “traditional liberalism” – left of center but not progressive or far left.
As much of my life is steeped in it, I can turn off the politics and just enjoy our common ground – because there’s a great deal of it. And even when we do venture into political discussion, I still can see where they’re coming from on most issues and can agree to disagree.
But there is a hill I’ll die on and it’s come into sharp focus this week with the announcement by the Biden administration that it was creating the “Disinformation Governance Board” – the DGB — through the Department of Homeland Security. Ostensibly, the aim is to combat “mis-, dis-, and mal-information.” Immediate and obvious comparisons to Orwell’s Ministry of Truth sprang up.
This trend of late by many on the left to look to the government to regulate (read: “control”) speech is beyond disturbing and is, in fact, the antithesis of liberal. It is. Illiberal – and this is where I WillStand up and fight.
