The Babylon Bee Editor in Chief Kyle Mann said There are reasons Nick Gillespie is the Editor-at-Large. He explains why Twitter refused to take down his famous tweet.
Twitter gave The Babylon Bee the boot in March when it tweeted out a satire article that “gave Rachel Levine a prestigious Man of the Year award,” as MannIt was simple. “We weren’t even making fun of Rachel Levine so much. We were making fun of the fact that USA Today named Rachel Levine one of their Woman of the Year,” Mann told Gillespie, alluding to the assistant secretary of health for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. “This had kind of blown up on social media, that transgender people had started to take awards away from biological women and we’re starting to erase that category from our society.”
The Babylon Bee needs to remove the tweet in question. However, the satire site has refused repeatedly. Gillespie asked Mann about why The Babylon Bee didn’t just delete the tweet to regain its access to Twitter. “We got together and said, ‘we’re not deleting this,’” answered Mann. “There’s a humiliation, like, ‘Bow before Twitter and apologize and acknowledge you’re calling someone who is a biological male,’ no matter what Rachel Levine identifies as.”
Twitter allows you to delete a tweet much faster than simply erasing the content. “By clicking Delete, you acknowledge that your Tweet violated the Twitter Rules,” every Twitter deletion notice reads. The tweet allegedly violated Twitter’s hateful conduct policy so deleting the tweet would mean agreeing that stating the fact that Rachel Levine is a “a biological male” is hateful. Mann disagrees.
“We love trans people. People like this are not considered beneath us. You know, the Christian worldview is that everybody has the opportunity to be saved and we can love everybody,” Mann said. “I’m no more deserving of God’s grace than a transgender person is. But when the culture bows down and starts handing out trophies to people for stuff like this is when we say, ‘Hey, wait a minute, we need to protect women in our society as well.”
