Gov. After Mayors Muriel and Eric Bowser expressed concerns over migrants being bussed to their towns, Greg Abbott (R.Texas), invited them to the southern border.
“Your recent interest in this historic and preventable crisis is a welcome development—especially as the President and his Administration have shown no remorse for their actions nor desire to address the situation themselves,” the governor wrote in a letter.
He continued:
“As Governor, I invite you to visit our border region to see firsthand the dire situation that only grows more urgent with each passing day, and to meet with the local officials, who like yourselves, realize this matter deserves immediate federal action. I also ask you to join me in requesting President Biden secure the border and put an end to this disastrous crisis.”
Arizona and Texas decided to buss in immigrants to two East Coast cities for multiple reasons. A single purpose may be feasible, since many of the communities bordering Mexico are not equipped to respond to a crisis. New York City and Washington D.C. are arguably better equipped.
This second goal is political. Progressive leaders and residents would see the crisis with their own eyes if they were not in denial.
As RedState’s Nick Arama reported in July, Bowser has gotten so frustrated with people arriving that she called for the National Guard to step in to assist. Adams was similarly concerned about the consequences of her actions and requested that local residents be informed.
“We can’t have the historical, ‘I believe people should be housed, but just don’t house them on my block.’ Everyone’s block is going to be impacted by this,” Adams said.

Bowser, Adams and others should accept Abbott’s offer in a momentary bipartisanship. However, it is doubtful that they will. It would act as a direct rebuke of the Biden administration’s handling of the border crisis in a significant way, so it would take courage for the mayors to take a stand.
Although Biden’s administration has been hardworking on border security, last week, the Department of Homeland Security silently announced that it would complete parts of Yuma, Arizona wall.
