“Ocasio-Cortez helped kill thousands of jobs. She did it based on myths and lies.”
The New York Daily News editorial board wrote a scathing rebuke of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Thursday, excoriating the New York Democrat for her role in bringing down the Amazon deal.
The Daily News, which has been characterized as the more liberal-leaning of New York’s two major tabloids and endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016, blamed Ocasio-Cortez for the loss of “25,000 to 40,000 jobs” in the city.

“Ocasio-Cortez helped kill thousands of jobs, based on myths and lies. She could at least do New York the common courtesy of admitting that,” read a tweet from the Daily News’ Twitter account.

“From the moment Amazon chose New York City, AOC used her massive platform as the biggest star in Congress to inveigh against the deal as an affront to economic justice, never mind the facts,” the editors wrote.
Ocasio-Cortez claimed the deal would cost the city $3 billion, but according to the Daily News editorial board, that argument was based on faulty logic.
“The company’s state tax breaks were to be paid back to it as jobs were created, only after they were created, as a fraction of the economic benefit produced,” they wrote.
The Daily News claimed that Ocasio-Cortez, who has a degree in economics, should know better. Instead — the editors say — she misrepresented the deal.
“Even if one forgave Ocasio-Cortez for failing to grasp how the deal worked in the heat of a high-stakes fight — and why should we? She majored in economics,” they wrote. “It takes willful ignorance to continue to misrepresent its terms now.”

According to the editorial board, Ocasio-Cortez continues to lie about the deal months later. At a Tuesday community board meeting, the freshman representative claimed Amazon wasn’t going to fund educational opportunities for people in the community to take advantage of the jobs. But the Daily News said that, too, is false.
“Actually, Amazon was set to build a new 600-seat school on its campus, and had committed to funding computer science classes in 130 New York City high schools,” they responded.
The editorial concluded by imploring Ocasio-Cortez to admit she was wrong.

Amazon was set to make New York the home of its second headquarters, but pulled out of the deal at the last minute after resistance from Ocasio-Cortez and other community groups. Many New Yorkers were angered by Ocasio-Cortez’s role in the deal’s collapse, with a majority polled naming her the biggest “villain” in the matter.
