Friday, Morning JoeJoe Scarborough (MSNBC) is highly praised The New Yorker editor David Remnick for an article he published excoriating Donald Trump supporters immediately after the former President’s election in 2016.
The frequent MSNBC guest then compared the 1/6 Capitol riots to “climate change” allegedly leading to natural disasters after decades of the U.S. not taking the issue seriously.
Scarborough invoked Remnick’s 2016 online tirade against Trump supporters and asked Scarborough: “I always speak about your extraordinary insights after Donald Trump’s win in the early morning hours of the day.” After seeing the events of yesterday’s one-year anniversary on January 6th, I am curious to know your thoughts.
Remnick, as he started his speech, complained about the absence of response to global heating alarmism.
It brings back memories of when scientists like James Hanson and Bill McKibben told the world about the dangers of climate change. They were laughed off. They were ignored. They were laughed off.
The liberal journalist, who was a former reporter for Scarborough, predicted that there would be assassinations in waves and other violence during a “civil War” in America.
I don’t think democracy is in danger. Why should the United States be exempted? What is the point of exempting the United States? All over the globe, this is a common trend. Our institution experience is deeper and more richer than most. This means that we can rely on guardrails to protect us from the worst. The Democratic party does not act in anti-democratic ways. They’re all flawed institutions, mind you, but the threat is severe, the threat is real, and if we ignore it, as we’ve ignored warnings of the late eighties and nineties about climate change, then we face the whirlwind, I believe.
Remnick’s piece, posted November 9, 2016, was a hilarious reaction to Trump’s election. This is how the article started:
Donald Trump’s election to the Presidency was nothing but a tragedy of the American republic and tragedy of the Constitution. It is also a victory for the forces of racism, authoritarianism and misogyny at home as well. Trump’s shock victory, and his ascendance to the Presidency are a sad event in America’s liberal democracy history.
Soon, he added that it was impossible to respond to the moment without revulsion or profound anxiety.
This was the only part of the article, which claimed that Trump supporters had behaved “foolishly”. Lawrence O’Donnell, MSNBC’s host read the article later that day on his program.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: I always talk about your extraordinary insights following Donald Trump’s election in the early hours the morning after that election. After seeing the events of yesterday’s January 6th anniversary, I am curious to know your thoughts.
DAVID REMNICK, THE NEW YORKER: Well, It brings back memories of those in the 1980s when scientists like James Hanson and Bill McKibben alerted the world about the dangers of climate change. They were dismissed. They were ignored. They were laughed off.
Yesterday was the speech of President Obama. Although it may have been late, we might still want to hear it sooner. The story doesn’t have to end here. It begs the question: Who is listening? It can’t be limited to just one-half of the country. That’s a problem. We were taught as children that the Constitution was an ideal document, and would save us. The law would also save us. Jill is able to speak more about this. It has been shown that leaders and people are important. People in persuasion positions have immense influence and power.
Just published a column where I had a conversation with Barbara Walter. This warning about civil war is something that some believe is too inflammatory, scaremongering, and the rest. It’s a useful and necessary warning. A civil war does not necessarily mean blue against gray or Gettysburg, but rather a long period of small militias, and extremist groups — there is an assassination, there’s storming at the state capitol, and there’s plot to kidnap a Michigan governor to abduct her for opposing a certain policy. This kind of attack on American democracy is possible. We’ve witnessed it most clearly in January 6.
