It was totally unimaginable to me.
Russia charged the United States of Supporting a Ukrainian Biological Weapons Program in the United Nations Friday. Moscow claimed it discovered this fact as its troops pushed deeper into Ukraine. The claim was vehemently denied by the United States’ U.N. ambassador, Linda Thomas-Greenfield.
Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s U.N. representative, told the U.N. Security Council that Russia had discovered “truly shocking facts” related to what he said were at least 30 Ukrainian laboratories working on diseases including anthrax, cholera and “the plague,” with funding and oversight by the U.S. military.
He said the “reckless” activity included research related to diseases born by birds, lice and fleas. “We call on you to think about a very real biological danger to the people in European countries which can result from an uncontrolled spread of bio-agents from Ukraine,” he said.
Just kidding. This was something a blind man could have seen coming.
The only thing US Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield was capable of doing was to sputter incoherently
“Russia is attempting to use the Security Council to legitimize disinformation and deceive people to justify President Putin’s war of choice against Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,” she said, adding that China has also been spreading disinformation supporting Russia’s claims.
“Ukraine does not have a biological weapons program, and there are no Ukrainian biological weapons laboratories supported by the United States — not near Russia’s borders, not anywhere,” she said.
This is a bad idea. First, the Security Council exists to “legitimize disinformation and deceive people.” That function is sort of baked into the membership and how the UNSC operates. The question that we must all ask is: a) Which party is disinformation spreading and b) Who is being deceived? The second thing wrong with her argument is that after the “gain of function” research sponsored by Francis Collins, Anthony Fauci, and their merry band of psychopaths at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the ensuing global pandemic, no one in their right mind would believe any statement by anyone in the US government over our role in biological weapons research or much of anything else.
There are many who think the US military is a fraud when it comes to the funding of biological warfare laboratories in Ukraine. I’m not one of them. Russian authorities are trying to make this a confusing situation by turning an unprovoked, illegal attack against a weaker and non-threatening neighbor into a campaign to save the world from the endless series of pandemics being orchestrated and funded by those who continue to persecute noble Russian citizens. The attack will succeed with some on the far right who’ve managed to convince themselves that Russia is a guarantor of Western civilization because they’ve outlawed gay butt-sex while they were also outlawing free speech, free association, assassinating dissenters, etc. The majority of the world will see this as Russia simply being Russia.
However, it is now obvious that many federal agencies have been operating medical experiments abroad because they don’t want to be run in the United States. A special counsel should be appointed by the next Republican to investigate and to prosecute Collins, Fauci, and all others involved.
As much as I loathe the Russian government and hope its hapless army gets bled white in Ukraine and Putin’s head ends up, I really have to admire what they are doing here. As the saying goes, don’t hate the player; hate the game.
