This was Dr. Anthony Fauci’s first encounter with Sen. Rand Paul since the NIH had admitted funding China gain-of-function research. During a Senate hearing, Paul took a blowtorch to Fauci’s lies and excuses. You can’t help but laugh at some of the absurdities.
Background: Fauci previously debunked with extraordinary vigor and called Paul a liar that NIAID had ever funded gain of function research at Wuhan Institution of Virology via EcoHealth Alliance. Now we know the truth. That per RedState’s Scott Hounsell.
In a letter dated October 20, Senator James Comer (R. KY), the National Institutes of Health confirmed to Rand Paul that Dr. Anthony Fauci was Director of National Institute of Allergens and Infectious Diseases. This revelation came during a hearing held on May 11, 2021.
During the hearing, Fauci made it clear that neither the NIAID nor the NIH ever supported gain of function research at Wuhan Institute of Virology. Fauci stuck with his story despite mounting evidence contradicting those claims. RedState has been the leader in the gain-of function story and was the first media outlet to report accurately that Fauci had lied about that encounter. The NIH letter discusses the genomic study of bat coronaviruses in Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Paul put Fauci in a lot of trouble today. At one point, the former tried to claim that gain-of-function didn’t happen because the experiments would not meet the current definition published on the NIH website. Fauci, and his agency, had clearly lied. It is amazing to see the lack of shame.
The complete exchange can be viewed here. Paul does not like this and is determined to fight every step of his way.
@RandPaulRound 7: Dr. Fauci vs. NIH [of “gain of function”]On the website to attempt to cover your arse, basically. That’s what you’ve done, you’ve changed the website to change the definition that doesn’t include the risky research that’s going on.” pic.twitter.com/g70anl1tMP

Fauci attempted to misdirect again by assuring everyone that the viruses in question could not have become COVID-19, but as Paul notes, that’s irrelevant and not the allegation that is being made. Still, why should anyone believe the NIH’s denials now about the origins of the coronavirus when they were caught red-handed lying about gain-of-function research? They have lost all credibility and cannot be trusted.
Perhaps even more unbelievably, though, Fauci makes the claim that gain-of-function is an imprecise term and that the newly changed definition on the NIH’s website should now be taken as the standard, a standard that just so happens to exonerate Fauci. You can’t talk about manipulating the outcome, okay?
Paul finally pressed Fauci once more, accusing Fauci to have changed the definition in order provide cover. The doctor claimed that the definitional changes were made by outside entities (who nearly certainly rely upon the NIH grant funding) but the Senator retorted, pointing out the stubborn dishonesty of refusing to accept any responsibility. Paul called Fauci’s resignation towards the end his time.
Rand Paul questions Dr Fauci. “Until you take responsibility, we won’t be able to stop another laboratory leakage of this hazardous type of experiment.” It’s not dangerous. I believe it is time to resign. pic.twitter.com/L1GNw9Nu9S

Fauci was also caught telling a lie regarding continued US funding for the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Paul stated that funding had been approved for Wuhan Institute of Virology in April 2020. The Chinese confirmed this just last month. Fauci, coy as ever, noted that’s “no longer the case,” no doubt another last-minute move like the website change.
We are not closer to justice because Fauci is still the most highly paid member of the US government. Paul, however, has done an amazing job in exposing Fauci for who he truly is. Hopefully, one day that’ll lead to something more than viral video clips.
