For the life of me, I can’t understand why those who cannot comprehend the idea of free speech feel the need to bring it up. Is it possible that they don’t realize the extent of their own ignorance or are they simply assuming their audience is too dumb to be aware? Matthew Yglesias, a Bloomberg columnist, was the latest leftist to misunderstand free speech after he disagreed with a statement made by Ben Shapiro (conservative podcaster).
In a post on Twitter, Shapiro called out Disney for pushing a “not-at-all-secret gay agenda” in its “Lightyear” The film centers on Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story. Twitter:
Disney works to push a “not-at-all-secret gay agenda” and seeks to add “queerness” to its programming, according to executive producer Latoya Raveneau. Parents should keep that in mind before deciding whether to take their kids to see “Lightyear,” which hits theaters this week.

It was then that Yglesias decided to utterly embarrass himself in response to Shapiro’s tweet. He replied:
Conservatives are now free to speak freely when they’re not in defensive mode, only for them to drop it as soon as possible.

Yglesias was like his far-leftist comrades and showed no understanding of what free speech is. It is quite sad considering he is a press member who should be better. This is an argument that I often see on radio and the internet. And it comes mostly from the far right, who don’t like free speech.
Since so many don’t understand how free speech works, I’m happy to take a few minutes out of my day to educate them.
Disney can make films that have their gay agenda in the content. This decision can be publicly criticized by people like Ben Shapiro.
The First Amendment says the government cannot interfere with one’s right to voice their views. Shapiro did not call on the state at any point to make certain types of content. This isn’t a violation to the Constitution.
Shapiro also did not oppose the First Amendment’s spirit, which states that it was against the First Amendment to suppress someone for having an opinion different from yours. Although he criticizes Disney, it does not make it unaffordable for them to produce whatever movies they want.
Free speech is the idea that anyone can say whatever they want and other people can criticize or praise them as they please. It is not about freedom from criticism, but freedom of expression. Thank you for attending my TED Talk.
