It’s no secret how CBS’s Magnum P.I. Feel the need to rebootAbout police officers. They’ve previously defended BLM violence as “patriotism,” labeled police as “the bad guys,” and claimed good cops are “guilty by association.” On Friday, they continued their hateful bias with a storyline so far-fetched it would almost be laughable if it weren’t for the serious repercussions it could have on this dangerous anti-cop climate in which a record number of police officers are being attacked and murdered across the country.
At the beginning of the episode, “Run, Baby, Run,” Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and his partner Juliet Higgins (Perdita Weeks) are hired to hunt down Stella Torres (Veronica Diaz Carranza), a woman who skipped out on her bail. The case is linked to Sergeant Wayne Nix, a Narcotics Officer (Tim Griffin). Interviewing him, Nix revealed that Stella had been a criminal informant.
Magnum (Zachary Knighton) and Magnum eventually discover that Stella was raped by Nix. They also discover Nix is a corrupt cop who used Stella’s intel to rip off drug dealers and that he has many dirty cops working for him. Jimmy Wu was also shot and killed by Nix when he tried to find Stella.
StellaWayne was the one I believed to be my salvation when I met him for the first time. After being arrested for a drug offense, my pasts meant that I was now looking to serious trouble. I took the offer he made and it seemed smart. It was my worst decision in my entire life.
RickHow did it happen?
Stella: He would put me in danger and use my Intel to steal from drug dealers.
Magnum: Yeah, He is the head of the HPD Drug Task Force, and it is safe to say that half the men who work for him have been shady.
Stella: Wayne’s untouchable. It was something he insisted on making sure I also knew. His advances terrified me. He started to approach me and I… So, I just…
Magnum: I’m sorry, Stella.
Stella“When I couldn’t find a way out I simply… Then I began looking for another way to escape. I nearly started using it again. Then… …He happened.
RickYou suddenly realize that your life is not the only thing you are fighting for.
StellaHis wake up call was all I needed. It was then that I began to make plans for my departure. Wayne discovered the truth about Wayne’s baby. I believe the cops that he was following me probably saw me go to an obstetrician.
Magnum: Wait, Did he have guys who were following you?
Stella: Every day.Wayne asked me questions about my pregnancy. I grabbed cash and a gun and ran. However A squad car pulled me up before I got far enough.
Magnum: So, Nix worked with the officers who were arrested. This is why you fought back.
Stella: But, they didn’t touch me. To increase my bail, they made up an assault charge. Wayne was the one who sent me a text message. Wayne sent me a message and so I put up bond. Since then I’ve been hiding, praying Wayne won’t find my whereabouts.
As Magnum and Rick begin to take Stella to Magnum’s house for safety because she’s “not very trusting of law enforcement at the moment,” an officer arrives to arrest her, and things quickly go south:
Stella: What’s happening?
Officer: Stella Torres? The murder of Jimmy Wu has placed you under arrest.
MagnumContinue reading Just got off the phone to Detective Kaleo. This is the case lead, right? She said nothing about the possibility of sending a team car.
Officer: Take it up with her. You have my order.
MagnumTake her off your shoulders.
Officer: What the hell are you doing, you ask?
Magnum: Your name is still on my mind. I believe you were present at the crime scene. You were at the crime scene, right? Rick. Go ahead. Don’t forget to put the bracelets on.
OfficerYour mistake.
Magnum: If I am I could be facing serious jail time. However, if it’s not I can tell you that I’m freelancing with Nix. Right now, I am going to call Detective Kaleo and find out if I should be calling you.
Rick: This is what I think you are right about.
Magnum: There is no sign.
Rick: You are not the only one.
Magnum: Someone must be jamming the guitar.
Officer: Are you really saying that I was alone?
MagnumYou can do it. Go, go, go, go, go.
Meanwhile, Higgins and lead detective Lia Kaleo (Chantal Thuy) head to Nix’s house where the plot sinks further. Nix isn’t just a rapist, liar, and possible murderer, he’s also planning to kidnap Stella’s baby – #eyeroll:
Heather: I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful, but like I said, the last time I saw Wayne was when you were here this morning. Is it really about anything?
Lia: He was in a relationship with one his CIs. We believe that he got his wife pregnant and then shot and killed another man in an attempt to keep the secret from being revealed.
Higgins: Frau Nix, We’ve just informed your that your husband fathered a baby with a CI. Do you feel any reaction?
Heather: I’m sorry.
Higgins: Was it something you did?
LiaStay with her.
Heather: No. He’s not present. He’s not here, I swear.
Lia: Juliet. Here.
Heather: He said that he didn’t know. He said that he was a CI and that he wanted his baby to go. However, it was complex so I could not ask any questions.
Lia: That didn’t sound alarming to you.
HeatherWayne did the right thing. Once I discovered I was unable to get pregnant, he started pushing me away. It’s my fault.
LiaLady! That is all sorts of insane. Now, you will tell us the location of your husband.
Heather: It’s hard to know. After you left, however, he said that there was an urgent matter that needed my attention and that I would not be able reach him.
Higgins: Stella is his priority.Magnum needs to be notified. (Exhales). Straight to the voicemail.
Back at Stella’s hideaway, Magnum takes four of the cops down with a compound bow while Rick shoots the uniformed officer through a window. This was done to show disrespect for their uniforms, just so they could.
Stella was cleared of all charges and the prosecution attorney requested an FBI investigation into her involvement in the operation.
“Or what’s left of it,” Higgins says dryly, “So, if there are any remaining bad apples, they’re gonna be sure to root them out.”
Magnum suggests they celebrate “taking down a bunch of crooked cops.”
I guess we should be grateful they aren’t promoting an ACAB message, but this storyline is still dangerous because it adds fuel to our hateful anti-cop culture at a time when ambush attacks against police officers were up 91% in 2020 and an historic number of officers were shot in the line of duty in 2021 – 346. Sixteen of those shootings were fatal.
No one’s rooting for bad guys, but knowing how many good cops have been gunned down makes this show’s tone-deaf depiction of a uniformed officer being shot in cold blood very unnerving. Thanks God Magnum P. Followed by Blue Bloods It has always supported the blue and depicted accurately the sacrifices that police officers make to protect us. Their messaging should cancel each other. Magnum P.’s anti-cop agenda.
