Last night, New York City police officers received a call regarding a domestic disturbance and were attacked by two of them. Responding to a 911 call, a female called and asked for help. She said that her 47-year old son Lashawn Mcneil needed assistance. No one was hurt, and no weapons were found. Mcneil is accused of shooting her son when she went to his room. Mcneil was then killed by a third officer.
22-year-old Officer Jason Rivera was shot and killed in the melee. Officer Wilbert Moura, 27 was severely injured. Mcneil remains in critical condition.

It was an alleged Glock with a large-capacity magazine that was stolen.

Rivera became a police officer, he said, to “better the relationship between the community and the police,” that he wanted to be there to do “something as small as helping a tourist with directions, or helping a couple resolve an issue will put a smile on someone’s face,” according to the NY Post.
Unfortunately, Mcneil allegedly took away Rivera’s chance to do that. Five NYPD officers were shot this year.
This is the story of an all-too familiar suspect. Mcneil was a felon with a long record. He was currently on probation for a drug offense. Mcneil had been arrested for several other offenses, including unlawful possession of weapons. Additionally, in 2002, he was charged with assaulting a Pennsylvania police officer and in 2003, another drug charge.
Again, this is a case of a police officer who was far too young and the accused has a long criminal history. It says something about the failure of the justice system — not on the part of the police, but on the part of the people who should be properly prosecuting and/or holding people accountable for their actions. Unfortunately, New York City has deeply failed in this regard, and it’s deeply hurting the city.
