“You’re 100% lying in this tweet.”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter Tuesday to complain that conservatives were “creepily” taking pictures of her.
She claimed to have totally called out one of them.
“Hi! I’m a person!” she quoted herself as saying. “This is weird!”
Tonight a dude was creepily (and obviously) taking a picture of me while pretending he wasn’t and I had to break his imaginary fourth wall and say “Hi! I’m a person! This is weird!” https://t.co/JnybvVubVh

The tweet was quickly celebrated by Ocasio-Cortez fans as another example of the freshman Democrat from New York no-nonsense ‘tude, especially when it comes to those damned conservatives.

However, hours later, right-wing journalist Caleb Hull tweeted that Ocasio-Cortez was lying about the interaction, apparently to make herself sound cool.
Hi @AOC, I was the one who was sent the picture you're complaining about. You're 100% lying in this tweet. You never turned around and you never said anything to the person taking the picture.
There's nothing wrong with taking a picture of a public figure in a public place. https://t.co/9SGlcVRZPn

Ocasio-Cortez and her supporters have often claimed the right is obsessed with her. However, Hull pointed out that taking photos of public figures in public places is actually standard practice.
Beyond just conservatives, Ocasio-Cortez has come into increasing conflict with the once-fawning press over her struggles with factuality. Her belligerent wrongness — along with her skilled use of social media to circumvent the mainstream media — have earned her comparisons to President Donald Trump, which she has angrily rejected.

The difference, she has argued, is that she’s “morally right.”
